Final Cut Pro X Petition
Here’s a petition regarding Final Cut Pro X put together at the Apple support community. If you agree with the statement, your support is appreciated.

We, both the editors and affected filmmakers who rely on Final Cut Pro as a crucial business tool, do so in the same way Photoshop, Maya, Pro Tools, and other industry-standard applications are relied on by leading post-production environments. Many have invested hundreds of thousands (some even millions) of dollars in creating Final Cut Pro based companies. These are now threatened by a “prosumer-grade” product upgrade of Final Cut Pro 7 titled “Final Cut Pro X,” and will likely put several of these companies out of business. The costly process of migrating studio hardware and software is a major burden, especially on studios that have made recent upgrades to support Final Cut Pro. If many had known of the Final Cut Pro X release prior to investing in expensive hardware and software licenses, most, if not all, would have sought alternative solutions.
A large corporation such as Apple, Inc. should not make “revolutionary” paradigm-shifting changes to software which can be referred to as “industry-standard”. This is unfair to workers who rely on Final Cut Pro as a business tool and will devastate the Final Cut Pro community. Many editors have relied on the software since its first release and supported Apple through both the hard and easy times. Apple Inc. now has over $75 billion in assets and does not need to risk the livelihoods of its professional customers by silently discontinuing “Final Cut Pro” instead of selling it to a company willing to support working film, tv, and advertising industry professionals.
We, the Final Cut Pro community, hereby request that:
1. Final Cut Studio 3 is immediately reinstated, supported, and referred to as Apple’s “professional grade” editing application.
2. Final Cut Pro is restored under a new name with the functionality and user interface of Final Cut Pro 7.
3. Final Cut Pro X is to be considered part of the iMovie family or labeled a “prosumer” product.OR,
1. The source code to Final Cut Pro 7 is auctioned or sold to a third-party by January 1, 2012.

The petition in 2008/9 over the removal of the FireWire port in the first unibody MacBooks was short and to the point, got over 18,000 signatures. and was successful – the port was reinstated in the next model to be sold.

So it can only fail. Unfortunately. 🙁This idea of an appropriately worded petition is excellent – Apple does screw up from time to time, but the FW example shows that Apple do listen and respond.
But this is not the one that will succeed. 🙁 -
That has to be the stupidest thing I’ve seen since this forum started. The f346778 software will be upgraded over time. Your installed fcp 7 still works and works beautifully.
If you don’t wanna use it DONT!!!!!

The petition clearly states that it is aiming for the return of the FireWire port in consumer notebooks, à la the MacBook and the MacBook Air. To date, Apple has not put a FireWire port in either model, so the petition was a failure.

Of course everyone is right in saying it won’t do anything… We’re dealing with Apple here! 😉
The petition is a goodbye letter with a few over-the-top requests. The original told them to sell FCP7 to Adobe, so nothing was expected from the beginning. Maybe Avid will think twice about releasing Media Composer as Media Composer X based on Windows Movie Maker. Ha!

It was the late-2008 aluminium unibody 13″ Macbook that shipped without a FW port – that was the subject of the petition. The early-2009 plastic MacBook did retain the port, unchanged.In mid-2009 Apple rebranded the aluminium unibody 13″ as a MacBook Pro, with the FW port reinstated.
So that was a success.Since it was the music production people who needed a FW port to run a multi-channel audio interface into Logic they were never concerned about the MacBook Air – it was too expensive and too underpowered for professional music production.

Phil, you’re absolutely right. A lot of editors are getting behind on projects arguing about this release. Time to get back to work.

The petition explicitly mentions purchasing a MacBook (not Pro) or a MacBook Air. Apple added a 13″ MacBook Pro with the FW800 ports…and you have no idea that the petition itself was the reason they did that in the first place.
