For Premiere CS3 and CS4, I’d recommend converting the files to Cineform files for editing in Premiere. Then you can export to basically anythign from there. You can do that with the native h.264 .mov files but Cineform should be easier to work with.

Depends on what you currently have. I’d say get the video card because most likely your processor is pretty good. A decent video card probably won’t do you much, especially if it’s not supported by the Mercury Playback Engine. Only 5 or so video cards are. I’d probably invest in the video card. But again, it depends on your processor specs.

It makes perfect sense actually. It does the heavy lifting and processes effects such as color correction, blurs, glows, etc. They are more power (have many more cores) than the CPU. You really need to watch the videos to really check it out.

Your LCD is probably not calibrated correctly. It’s probably set to a really high brightness setting. If you’re using the camera LCD, try knocking it down on brightness, using that little gauge on the bottom so that it tells you where the exposure is. I usually like to expose faces around +1. Maybe right in the middle works too but it depends on the lighting in the frame.
I’m assuming the T2i has that. I’m using the 7D but I’m sure it has something like that.
Another option is to get an external LCD like the Ikan VX9 and calibrate that so what you’re seeing is exactly what you’re getting. That’s the best option.

64 bit is one of the reasons. Another is that it has a new feature called the Mercury Playback Engine. What that does is it uses your graphics card to help out the CPU or free up the CPU. If you have a powerful graphics card like the Quadro FX 4800 or the 5800, it uses the cores of the graphics card to essentially play back the footage. The strain is taken off the CPU and put onto the GPU.

It really depends on your needs but keep in mind that you can buy refurbished if you don’t need the latest and greatest. You might also want to check place like Ebay and Craigslist for used machines. I bought mine off Craigslist – 8 core 2.66Ghz, 6gigs of RAM (adding more) for $2000 still under Apple Care and it works great. I got it from a Motion Graphics company in Manhattan. It was a freelance box but they were going through tough times, didn’t have enough work for freelancers, and so it was just sitting there.

The Quadro FX card is actually $1449 on Mac, $1549.99 on the PC.

Pretty damn good if you ask me. Also, you can get this card and get some pretty good performance out of it so I hear:

As far as Matrox, look into the Mini and see if it suits your needs, if not the Matrox MXO2 LE is the next step up for about $950.

In addition to what Alan said, your computer monitors might not be correct as far as brightness and contrast is concerned. Your TV might not be correct either. I’d calibrate both as close as possible to get the best results.
As for viewing on other’s TVs, well, it’s the sort of thing where you just have to hope their TVs and monitors are close to correct. Unfortunately….
