Appears I’m coming late to this party, and you have probably moved on, but when I want to freeze a frame I typically use ‘frame hold’. To do this, I trim the clip with the image I want so that the image is the first frame of the clip. Then I right click on the clip and choose ‘Frame Hold’. On that dialog box click the ‘Hold On’ box and make sure the drop down says ‘In Point’. If needed also click the ‘Hold Filters’ and ‘Deinterlace’ check boxes. You can size the clip to the amount of time you want by extending its end (don’t extend from the front of the clip, as that will change the frame at the In Point).

Since it sounds like you want a pseudo photo montage, you may want to try the ‘Posterize Time’ video effect.

I would highly recommend Painter. It emulates watercolors (and other paint) as well as papers and brushes. I know you hate to buy another app, but I believe it to be the right tool if you want to ‘feel’ like you are painting.

Trying to read between the lines, you are using the charmap app to get the symbol, then I assume you are pasting it in. Make sure the font in PS matches the font you are using in charmap. Pasting does not necessarily copy the font type.

Sorry, but I have to provide some ‘insider’ knowledge on the flash memory market. As they continue to shrink the memory cells, they become more and more prone to fail. What you are using now is likely, at the gate level, to be more error prone than what you used two years ago.
The way around it is that they provide better error detection and correction and extra memory cells to replace ones that are determined to be bad. With the cells being smaller, they can have extra backup cells.
Reading some of the literature, it is almost scary at how much they have to do to keep some semblance of data coherency.

I looked for the preview plug-in about a year and a half ago, since it did work at one time. I think the plug-in was installed when you installed PS…
What I vaguely remember was that it was buggy (although I didn’t encounter anything) and support was dropped. Try looking again. I do know that Win7 has a better interface for these type of previews and Adobe (or is it Canon?) offers one for the RAW files.

I’d use the pen tool to create the shapes. This would allow the smooth curves. Then change the opacity (or screen mode) so that you can see through them a bit.

As you say, you could make a really long stream and just scroll through them. I don’t have FCP, but I would use after effects and just have the points of my shapes move over time. I imagine FCP has similar abilities.
