    FCP is known to be unable to handle long takes of HDV material. With the JVC HD100, for example, you cannot ingest a full tape of *uninterrupted* footage. You simply can’t, FCP will break it at arbitrary spots and create a new clip.
    I personally got fed up with that as I was synching 3 cameras for interviews, a similar scenario, and switched to Premiere with does the job just fine, same tapes and camera, no breaks. If you want to use FCP you can work around the problem by using DVHSCap, an Apple program part of the FireWire SDK, capture your footage as .m2t files, then convert them to QT by using MPEG Streanclip, another free program. Bring the footage in FCP now and you’ll be able to use Multiclips. If you shot your footage in 24p you will need to specify the frame rate in MPSC as 23.976.

    Good luck

    KeyCorrect Pro, also from RedGiant, provides several features of Primatte’s matte manipulations, including light wrap, matte edge blur and feather, for any matte pulled inside AE. Anyway, thanks for the tip about Premiere. Since both Premiere and AE can share plugins this is another plus for Premiere.

    Can you create a text layer just for the period?

    In your text layer with the period type “t” for transparency, Alt/Option click on the stopwatch to access the formula, enter this:

    x = Math.sin(time*10);
    if (x<0) 0 else 100

    You can use smaller multipliers for longer interval between blinks

    What codec did you select for the compressor of the sequence? Codecs that use temporal compression, like HDV and MPEG, cannot be used for a QT reference movie as they require to rebuild the GOPs. Also the sequence has to be fully rendered in order to get a reference movie as QT needs to create pointers to the renderfiles

    HDV uses temporal compression, this means that you cannot write HDV back from your NLE or AE without recompressing it, even if you haven’t done anything more than a straight cut. You can work with HDV in AE, it’s not optimal but it can be done. When you need to export to another application use a different codec in order to preserve color information. You can use any of the lossless built-in codecs available in QT (PNG, Animation, Uncompressed, TIFF) or employ the excellent SheerVideo (https://www.bitjazz.com). Also, and I don’t know if this works because I don’t know Vegas, you can export to a sequence of TIFF from AE, usually the preferred method to exchange clips. If Vegas can import image sequences this method will likely give you the best result. The advantage is that you can re-render portions of your comp without re-render it completely and it also allows you to use the network renderer.

  • In my experience LaCie drives fail with in credible frequency. I had 3 drives fail out of 4 and that is not a good sign. With multiple interfaces you can try to see if the drive is accessible via the FW 400 or USB port . Sometimes one port gets fried but the others will be fine.
    My advice is to use the laCie drives for something that is not important, like render files. After the last failure, which costed me footage and photos and happened abou 6 months after the drive was purchased, I switched to the FirmTek SATA enclosure. Not only I can control the quality of the drives that I use, LaCie seems to use some of the cheapest drives in the market, but I can swap them with ease and they are much faster than FW disks.
    Take a look at http://www.firmtek.com

    Capturing as in *direct* capturing will be better in ProRes but capturing from the HDV tape to ProRes will cause transcoding. This means that a small portion of your data stream will be lost because of the lossy nature of ProRes. You can c convert to Uncompressed or SheerVideo (https://www.bitjazz.com) and use a script ( https://www.popcornisland.com/downloads ) to import the FCP XML project directly inside AE without rendering an external clip.

    This tutorial https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials.html?id=43 shows how to setup the 3D scene by using the solids in 3D.
    Once you have mastered the use of 3D objects and 3D camera manipulation the “merging” of words is a perspective distortion caused by dollying the camera way out and having the light behind the words come up at the right time. In AE a lot of time is spent in timing things just right.

    March 28, 2008 at 3:23 pm in reply to: Keying Advice

    I don’t know how long the footage is and how much the subject looks but the clothing and the hair make it a good candidate for roto. The podium might be at least easier to key with a mask than trying to adjust Keylight to remove the green reflection. Roto it and the color correct it to remove the green cast. The jacket is also very green and it can be just easier to roto it. If you have a good roto tool like Silhouette Roto it can be actually doable. Create the original mask, track the subject and associate the tracker to the layer containing the mask.

    Good luck
