I wouldn’t do it as ProRes is a lossy codec and you are basically transcoding from HDV, lossy encoding at 4:2:0, to another lossy codec. This will give you a generation loss.
If you get to *capture* in ProRes then no problem but transcoding will inevitably lead to image degradation.
An alternative to Uncompressed is BitJazz’s SheerVideo (https://www.bitjazz.com) which is completely lossless while being less than 1/2 the size of Uncompressed.

Yes, that’s exactly the reason why it didn’t work. The chown (change owner) command changes the ownership of the files. Glad you found a solution.

This is a problem with the permission flags. It seems that the installer can default to a different user’s permissions if multiple users are installed on your machine.
After you install PI open the Terminal, go to the folder where PI is installed, usually /Application/particleIllusion 3.0 and run the following commands:

    – sudo bash
at the prompt enter your usual password
    – chmod -R your_user_name *
your_user_name is of courser your user name (short version)
    – chgrp -R staff *
    – exit

    That should fix it.

I started using PCs with DOS 2.0. I used to build my own machines and compile custom-tuned Linux kernels. I say this just to make it clear that I don’t advocate the Macintosh because I don’t want to be involved with the technical side.
Years ago I had to make a decision for a new machine and I decided that it was time to stop tweaking the machine and spend more time doing what I love: filmmaking. So I bought a Mac and I never looked back.
The reasons are many. The Mac has all the power that you need but it keeps from unnecessary meddling with the innards of the system. It’s not perfect but it’s the closest to perfect that a computer can get today.
While the ease of use of the Mac makes it a very enjoyable machine to use, if you need to get “dirty” you can open the Terminal and use one of the best Unix terminal emulators in the market today. There is really no compromise between power and ease of use. You get both.
Of course, the total lack of viruses helps with the peace of mind too.

To me, if your priority is to spend more time working on what you love instead of babysitting the computer, the Mac is the way to go.
