I also really like how you can rename the media file in finder and FCPX still links to it as long as it is open when you do it!

Hi Rick,
Yes, you are fine to do that. I decided to use a program “better renamer” to rename my DSLR files before importing into FCPX. This is because we do a lot of shooting, and I want to always have unique file names, with the project information baked into the filename just in case just in case I need to find it later without the app. But for your purposes you are fine in the Event browser. Rename away!!!

Hi Jeremy,
I realize this thread ended a half year ago, but I’d like to take you up on your offer to talk about your SAN experiences. It looks like we may be ready to make the move soon, so hearing your experiences and opinions would be really valuable. We are closing shop in a couple of days for the holidays. But would you be available for a quick chat in early January?
Let me know!

Although I do think that in future filenames will become the most important thing when communicating with other apps, and things like reel # (timecode even!) will become a thing of the past. Do you?

Ok, thanks a lot. That was very thorough, and now I do understand the dangers.
I really hope that as FCPX XML becomes more widely adopted, we will be able to use that and not EDLs to go back and forth between other apps.

Well, ok. My keywording was, shall we say, a little lazy. So I had a whole scene of a person named John, but then there was a nice close-up where he wasn’t speaking, which I also tagged John because I new I would use it. Now, technically yes, I should have tagged it as CU or something else, but if I just had a bin with all the John clips, I could see them at a glance and know which one was the CU, so it seemed unecessary, and I didn’t want to go through the effort of making a smart collection with multiple keywords.
So yes, a little lazy, or just trying to be fast. But it looks like FCPX won’t show you both clips separately. If there is a range based keyword within a larger clip with the same keyword, FCPX won’t separate it out as a separate thumbnail in the collection. Not a bug per say, just something for me to understand.

Hi Oliver,
It’s me, Oren, we just met! Can you explain in more detail situations when the clip name and/or or media file name is important for round tripping to other apps?
I know apps like Colour, Soundtrack Pro, (Resolve?) use the media file name. Which apps rely on the clip name?
Thx,
Oren

Hi, just joining this thread,
In theory I don’t have a problem with FCPX managing my clip names for me, however, in practice I can see a problem, for example with DSLR footage.
Because of the ways DSLRs number clips, you will end up with many clips with the exact same name in different events. Wouldn’t this cause problems for the database in the event that clips ever need to be reconnected? That’s what worries me.
So, being able to give each clip its own unique name is important to me. Wish there was an easy way to do this.
