Fascinating! On my older MacPro, I have often noticed editing performance is slowed down significantly if Safari is running.
So, I know how to set-up RAID levels, but how about block size and protection from infringing apps? Is this something I can do in disk utility or preferences, or do I need specialized software (or a specialized person!!!) to help me with this?
Is there somewhere I can go to learn more?
Cheers,
Oren

Okay, now I’m really interested.
Forgive me. I’m just an editor who somehow ended up as the post supervisor and am now responsible for planning equipment purchases and workflow for a growing production company. . . moving from a one man band environment to more of a production house. So I don’t have a tonne of experience here, but I’m learning fast.
I’ve heard about this idea of “tuning” and how important it is, but I never understood exactly what this meant. Can you explain? How do you “tune” a storage array?
Now, this is a little off topic, but we almost went to shared storage this year, but XSAN was too expensive and I wasn’t sure a gig-e NAS system would meet our needs, so we are continuing with local storage for now. If you have any tips or resources for better understanding the options (especially for use with FCPX) that would be much appreciated as well!
Best,
Oren

Fair enough. Fair enough. Still, why don’t they just sell an empty unit? Doesn’t make sense to me. . .

Wow, pretty impressive. I think I’ll just go with Promise then. Too bad you can’t buy the enclosure without drives. It’s quite an expense to remove the ones that come with it and swap in your own. . .

Have you guys tried manually copying and replacing the “currentevent” database file. So you duplicate the event and all media the first time, but the next time you want to update your copy, you just replace the database file in the event folder.
Haven’t tried, but might work. . . ?

Ok, great! Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

If not using sparse images, when you move said project or event in the FCPX interface, do all the folders go with it?

Hi Jeremy,
Well, we’ve always been an all Mac shop, but it’s true, you never know what the future will hold or what direction the industry will go. . . food for thought.

Hi Jeremy,
There is a technician at the local Mac store that has set-up XSANs before for other companies. He would be setting ours up and maintaining it for us if we went with XSAN. I do understand it will cost around 40k to do the fibre channel version, so yes we are considering it carefully before jumping in.
We have also talked with other suppliers about their various SAN and NAS products. Unfortunately, there is no local VAR where we live (Canadian East Coast).
We have a MacPro, 2 Imacs, and a MacbookPro, which we would network. Everything except the tower have thunderbolt.
For now, we may just pretend we have a SAN by centralizing our storage and checking projects in and out using “sneaker net” over thunderbolt, while we figure out the best way to go forward. There are so many variations on SANs from different suppliers, it can be a little mind boggling.
