I am sure Barry is talking about SD cards. There is no way to plug a SxS card in “the new SD powerbooks”, other than a Sony SxS reader.
I have now shot more than 450hrs on SxS w/o any problems at all. Much better than in the tape days.
I also have the SD card adapter and 5 16GB SD cards, if I need to keep on shooting after my SxS cards and PHU-60 drives are full.
So far that has not happened. I have only tested the SD cards, OK so far, but I don’t really trust them.

November 9, 2009 at 6:51 pm in reply to: Tripod for pmw ex1r 2 -1/4 20 threads base plateI am developing a baseplate for the EX3R that is much stronger and has “wing” for mounting mikes NanoFlash etc. And has universal 3/8″ and 1/4″ that fits any Pro head.
I currently am making pre production plates for the EX1.
If you are interested contact me.

Relying on auto iris is not a good idea.
There are to may situations where it will always be wrong, snow, bright beach and backlighting comes to mind for starters.
Learn how to use the histogram and zebras. And there is the percentage readout in the center of the EX cams.
Using manual exposure also keeps the shots from the dreaded iris change when moving camera or having a light or dark object pass through your scene.
There is nothing that says amateur in a shot more than auto iris.

November 7, 2009 at 10:13 pm in reply to: Focus ring has no effect when fully zoomed outThe EX3 has a pretty wide lens so if you are not monitoring on a HD monitor it will be hard to tell if it is out of focus especially if you stop down to f8 or so.
The only way to really find out is a proper HD monitor. Or transfer the footage to a computer and view at full res.
Make sure iris is wide open for these tests set iris, gain and shutter speed manually. And make triple sure you are in manual mode.
Also does your lens hold focus zoomed all the way in when panning camera to different objects at different distances? If not you are not in full manual or the camera is malfunctioning by not staying in full manual.

THIS IS ONLY SPECULATION ON MY PART.
I would not be surprised if you can get 10,000 hrs out of the EX cams. If it is handled gently.
The parts that were the weakest links in the tape days was the heads and the load/transport tape mechanisms.
I also had a few problems with CCD dead pixels that needed repair.
It is wonderful to be away from tape, at least in the production part of the business, I still deliver on Beta SP a lot.
I think you are more likely to physically break the camera than to have anything wear out. Things like the wimpy baseplate and mic holder. I can also foresee problems with the EX3 viewfinder and the SxS door. Possible the battery port, and some of the rather cheap switches. Under “rough handling” in the production environment.

Well there is always the old light meter.
I still have 2 Luma Pros.
And they are great at checking how even light is and to check how many stops between highlight and shadow.
Scopes of course are the best, but they weigh more than a Luma Pro on location.

Some more info please.
What OS, QT and M100 versions? Are you using Flip for Mac?

You could try secondary room in Color. It has about the same capabilities as Photoshop, it will probably still be tricky, but it can work miracles.
Some makeup in your camera bag is the best fix fore future interviews. I always face towels and some different shades of face powder in a small bag for sweaty situations.

It depends on your F stop.
At F1.9 yes you should be able too. But at F8 or more probably not.
Are you using ND’s to keep aperture open?

I think you probably could very carefully repair this with epoxy and maybe some additional metal or plastic.
In the long run you may be better off letting Sony fix it. Home repair will probably kill your warranty.
If warranty is out, I would definitely try an epoxy fix. And a mod to strengthen mount.
EX3’s have the same problem. With those you can get a plate from:
https://shop.dm-accessories.com/products/ex3-plate
or
https://www.vfgadgets.com/grip-camera/ex3-heavy-duty-base-plate-systemMaybe someone will come up with a plate for EX1’s, I have thought about making one. It is not as easy as for the 3, and it would need some modification of camera body.
If someone in my area, NH, has an EX1 and wants to try to improve base get in touch with me.
