Symphony Nitris:
HD today as included, not an option. If you go HD in the future, SN lets you do uncompressed HD.
Hardware-accelerated true RT effects.
More advanced color correction.Adrenaline:
Solid performer. Cross-platform. Some interface lag reported, probably caused by FireWire based I/O (DNA) system.

Not in every session, but yes. For example, an offline edit using music and photos. iTunes to preview the music cuts, iPhoto to organize the images. Then there’s an e-mailed script revision. Safari and Word to get and open the revised script. I also do credits that way. Have the client give me a Word doc, copy and paste the text so that I can build the graphics in Photoshop or AE and then bring into FCP or Avid.

One thing you have to remember is workflow. As an editor, I generally work with Photoshop and sometimes Word, Quicktime, iPhoto, iTunes and/or After Effects open at the same time and bounce between them all. A dual-boot wouldn’t fit my workflow at all and I would have no interest in duplicating the apps on both OSX and XP.
Autodesk is going firmly down the Linux path.

Check your Kona genlock settings. Konas seem to have problems there. Should work with the Kona in freerun and the deck set to input reference. If you have external sync to the Kona, make sure it is properly terminated and see if that helps when you are set to genlock. Try assemble rather than insert. Make sure your timeline tab is closed.

Just a thought, but remember that while you are cutting, the sequence is holding all the info for all the camera angles so you can easily make changes. If you are done with the cutting, collapse your sequence to get back to single clips on the timeline. If you are done with one part, but not others, duplicate and break up into chunks and collapse the portions that are locked.

Project is 29.97 1080i 10 bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed”Are kidding! There’s nothing about 10-bit HD that will be real-time. You will have to render before going to tape, no matter what. Kona doesn’t accelerate any effects. The only “acceleration” has to do with offloading some of the scaling inherent in various codecs, like DVCProHD or HDV. You are working in the most taxing common video format there is at the moment. Drive performance is also crucial. For example, an Xserve RAID will barely give you the performance you need here.

Likewise, I’m running Xpro and FCP5 on a 15″ PowerBook. The recommended practice, though is dual-boot. Just because it works now doesn’t mean it will work after some software update is made. For example, with Tiger, my Xpro stopped working correctly until the optimized version was released. More of my work these days is FCP (though I prefer Avid), so I just take the risk and try to keep the machine current for FCP.
