realtime? really?
Posted by Lexerton on March 23, 2006 at 9:33 amSimple question…
will a Kona LHe do realtime 3-way colour correction?
Project is 29.97 1080i 10 bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed.
Machine is quad 2.5 G5 4.5 gb Ram, FCP 5.0.4 etc, etc. 4gb Fibre array.

March 23, 2006 at 9:49 amI don’t think it will do it in what FCP states as “Full Quality RT”. You’ll get a green bar, probably. I can test this at work in an hour or so.
8-bit will give you full RT however.

March 23, 2006 at 1:41 pmthanks, Eric
We’re just getting red bar at the moment – will probably have to go 8Bit.
We’re doing our first online and trying to gat a handle on what it’s capable of…Alex

March 23, 2006 at 2:53 pmMost RT is limited to the following three factors.
1. The speed of your computer and the amount of RAM
2. The Speed of your drives
3. The compression and codec you are working in.When FCP went to the internal/processor based RT extreme engine which placed the processing squarely on the computerss processors instead of off board, third party processing, then these became the mai factors in determining the RT performance. Rarely does it have anything to do with the video card as it is

March 23, 2006 at 3:33 pmWe’ve had a go in 8bit and everything is working well (realtime 3-way, quicker renders, less space needed etc) so that wil be the way for us.
thanks for the replies.

March 24, 2006 at 1:23 pmI think this is a problem with the KONA driver as I know that this problem does not exist when using “other” cards.
I wonder if an upcoming release will ever solve this?David

March 24, 2006 at 5:30 pmI could be wrong but I believe 10 bit in FCP is never realtime – at least that is what I was told.
I dont believe it was ever 10 bit realtime when I had Cinewave, Kona 2 or now with my Kona 3.
One workaround though it so work in 8 bit with realtime – then once done change the timeline to 10 but and just re-render.

March 24, 2006 at 8:49 pmI have always understood this to be a limitation of the KONA driver, as other configs do have RT in 10bit HD.

March 25, 2006 at 1:04 amI’d opt for the “using 8-bit video, doing final-rending in 10-bit” almost. However, from what I’ve heard Apple’s 8-bit codec isn’t top-notch, or am I wrong here?

Project is 29.97 1080i 10 bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed”Are kidding! There’s nothing about 10-bit HD that will be real-time. You will have to render before going to tape, no matter what. Kona doesn’t accelerate any effects. The only “acceleration” has to do with offloading some of the scaling inherent in various codecs, like DVCProHD or HDV. You are working in the most taxing common video format there is at the moment. Drive performance is also crucial. For example, an Xserve RAID will barely give you the performance you need here.
