Xpress AND FCP
Probably a frequent post, but here goes…
I’ve heard some stories regarding Xpress Pro and FCP living harmoniously (or at least tolerably) on the same system. I’m looking to sink $7K – $10K on a system for home.
If this is so:
Q1: Does it NEED to be a G5, or is a Powerbook with external drives just fine?
Q2: Would I have to purchase the system as an Avid turnkey and then add FCP, or does it not matter?______

I am running both Avid Xpress Pro 4.8 and Final Cut Studio on Mac OSX Tiger on a 15″ Powerbook G4 with 2GB RAM, and 1.5GHz G4 processor. I have two external Firewire Seagate 300GB 7200rpm drives, and both Xpress and FCP run flawlessly on this setup. No problems here.
The only thing compared to a desktop G5 system is that on the Powerbook, the render times are a little slow, but what can you expect? I have no complaints. Right now I am doing everything in Avid Xpress Pro, even though I come from a FCP background. After using both, I prefer Avid, to be honest with you. Avid rocks, plain and simple.

Likewise, I’m running Xpro and FCP5 on a 15″ PowerBook. The recommended practice, though is dual-boot. Just because it works now doesn’t mean it will work after some software update is made. For example, with Tiger, my Xpro stopped working correctly until the optimized version was released. More of my work these days is FCP (though I prefer Avid), so I just take the risk and try to keep the machine current for FCP.
