Interesting Kim. As you, neither did I like the Color FX room in Color. It was confusing and felt more like a compositor than a color correction tool.
I like having nodes for the grading. Finding the correct node comes with experience and habits. I usually start with a node to make the image neutral, then on the next nodes I have ‘secondaries’. In the end I put the overall color adjustments, vignettes and if needed, some more exposure control.
Now, that’s just me. It might not be logical for anyone else. But if you stick to habits, you will instantly know what node you need to adjust in a shot.
Kim gives a good comparison. Nodes isn’t much different from layers. It’s just the way it’s represented in the GUI. Well, not only that – but essentially if you’re not going to do too advanced stuff, that’s what you need to know.

When I started to learn Resolve about a year ago, I started with a keyboard, Wacom tablet and a ShuttlePro2 which I assigned the most used shortcuts to.
It wasn’t as intuitive as if it had color wheels, but on the on ther hand, this was never built to be used with mouse or tablet. It’s not impossible. I used the software for 8 months before I bought a control surface. On one hand I’m glad I waited – I got to learn the software and it’s functions at a slower pace to really get into it bit by bit. And when I got the control surface, it was an upgrade which made me work faster. The JL Cooper Eclipse is super! But of course I’d like to get the mother ship one day…. 😉
I recommend taking a course at fxphd if they have a resolve course available this term.

Doesn’t it take ages to make new r3d files? Just asking. I might consider getting Storm if I get more r3d jobs.

As far as I know, Lite has a few restrictions like maximum HD and two nodes only. So if you can make an EDL or XML, it would work fine.

The file names are as mentioned previously. There’s no easy way to right-click the clip in the timeline, Re-connect, and find the correct folder and clip. Unless I overlook something.
What I’m saying is, they used FCP to transcode the R3D files, from names such as A0032421342whatever-it-is to “Interview Jason”.
Doing a simple “Search” or “Locate” won’t help me much since I don’t see what the original filename was.

Funny thing is, they have renamed all their proxies to things like “Library wide shot”, “Library tilt up”, “Interview Jason” etc.. Doing relinking to all these shots in FCP will be a major pita.
Some times I wish I could hire someone to do conform for me.. 🙂

I didn’t do the editing. Some editor transcoded it all to Prores 422 HQ. Luckily in HD, so I can work on those. Not ideal for some of the shots, but it’ll have to do this time.
Never had that problem before, that clips appear black in the timeline. Any heads up on that issue ?

OK So I let DaVinci do its work over night. I don’t know how long it took, but it’s all in the media pool. However.. What I’m seeing now is that the offline and the timeline I have (from FCP XML) don’t match. It’s totally different shots in the timeline compared to the offline.
DOH! That’s a first actually…
Also, a lot of the R3D clips are black in Resolve. Too bad the deadline is today. I’ll have to use the prores proxy they used for editing on this one. Got no time to fix this atm.
