So I started looking at motherboards, CPUs, PSU and GPU. What would be better? Two XEON or one kick ass i7?

I chose two 4-core XEON to begin with, 12GB ECC RAM, 4x GTX 580, and the computer (excluding hard drives, DVD burner, case and Windows license) would cost me about $5000 according to Googles Norwegian Krones to USD conversion.

It’s a price I can live with. So the next question would be; will this be on par with a Linux solution? Better or worse?

I’ve never touched Windows for work since the days of Adobe Premiere 6 and the genuine software (formerly known as) Avid Liquid. When Vista came I jumped over to Mac and have ever since been a Mac guy. Love the OS. Just too bad there’s no way I can add more GPUs in a cost-effective way; internal – not external.

Another thing regarding Resolve coming to Windows is that in this little part of the world, anyone can grab Resolve and put me out of business.

YES, talent doesn’t come with the software, but how often do we see bad movies being put up on the big screen.. Talent isn’t what everyone wants. They just want it cheap. The ones who wants quality will hire the talent of course, but still. Norway is too little for everyone to become a colorist, or do it in-house – which now became tons easier with Windows support.

I can’t seem to find 8.1 – they said on Twitter it’s out now, yet their website says “late september”.

However, I agree on the hardware end of things. More GPU power for less money. And it’s available from any street corner. However, my experience with Windows haven’t been too good. And what about codecs?

Most of my clients want their projects delivered as ProRes. Adding another step before final delivery will be on par with the solution today, unless Windows Resolve can render plenty times faster.

2012 will be an interesting year for sure…..

What do you mean by “accept xml v4 or 5” ? I’m having no problems exporting XML v5 from FCP and load it in the Conform page.

Is there any features XML v4 and 5 has that isn’t interpret correctly by Resolve ?

Do all these things in FCP. Get the timeline over to Resolve with XML.

In Resolve, you render and select FCP XML Roundtrip.
Then in the Conform page, Export and save as an XML.

Import this XML in FCP. It will reconnect to the graded shots. AND apply all weird transitions, scaling and so on.

This was talked about just a few weeks ago. I think the trick was to isolate highlights and soften it a bit so you get into the mid-tones as well. Then use Mist or Blur to make it blur even further.

I’m paranoid. I’m starting to work on a TV series now. 10 episodes, each about 400-600GB, 45 min per episode. New database, and will only be used only for these 10 episodes.

Good or bad – it doesn’t hurt.

2) If I understand this correct – you want different versions or grades to have different settings for pan, tilt, rotate and zoom? I’m not sure it’s working that way today. Honestly haven’t looked for it, but I don’t think it does.
3) I prefer to keep the clips ganged and adjust them all in one go. If there happens to be one or more clips I want to adjust further without affecting the others (but do not wish to use Batch copy), simply make a new version for that clip.
