  • Glows and diffuse highlights?

Posted by Robert Glanns on August 31, 2011 at 3:01 am

I’m in my 3rd week now working with Resolve with clients in the room, and I’ve been having difficulty pulling off some looks that I could easily pull off in Apple Color’s ColorFX room, such as diffused highlights and glows.

I can qualify the highlights in Resolve, but I’m finding that the Qualifier Blur amount doesn’t go nearly high enough to get a nice, wide, soft diffusion on only the highest of the highlights. Is there a good trick to pull off this effect in Resolve?

This was talked about just a few weeks ago. I think the trick was to isolate highlights and soften it a bit so you get into the mid-tones as well. Then use Mist or Blur to make it blur even further.

Or you copy your node and add the same amount of blur, again and again.
I agree, it should be much wider.

With V8 I’m getting into adding same clip to another trk

Grade down with whatever you want to get the pings you want. Blur then sent to ADD or Screen if you must.

You can start getting nice diffused looks in the blacks also by negating the darks and using multiply.

Simon, that worked a TREAT. I used screen instead of add and then put multiple additional nodes on the new layer, each with Mist cranked to 11

    Cheers buddy.

This is the only, and I stress only realm where Apple Color really outshines Resolve and ultimately it’s pretty minor unless everything you grade needs that diffused look.
