What you are trying to achieve is known as the “Pleasantville Effect,” named after the movie “Pleasantville,” which used this effect heavily. What Oliver has described is sound and good (as always!), but there’s an easier way (to me, anyway)…or at least, another way to do it. Here’s the tutorial:

When you say “Adobe,” what program are you referring to? I’m assuming Premiere? If so, Premiere and Avid are not compatible on the same machine, as they interact with (and make changes to) Windows differently. You must choose which app you wish to use and then stick with that app. You can run Avid and FCP on a Mac with no problems, but on a PC, it’s a no-go.
After deciding which app you’re going to work with (again, assuming we’re talking about Premiere here), uninstall the other one and see if you’re able to work again. If not, you may have to reinstall Windows plus all your drivers and other software before you can edit again.

Nope. Adrenaline and up (or an older Meridien Composer). It’s on the wishlist of many users (and Avid’s aware of that). We’ll see what goodies arrive with the next release, I suppose. I wouldn’t expect them anytime soon.
Use Boris Red/Avid FX for now.

Boris Continuum Complete is integrated directly into Adrenaline 1.5 and later. Make sure you get the most current version, though, which would be BCC AVX 4.
Genarts Sapphire is killer, but spendy. Many view it as a “must-have” plugin suite. https://www.genarts.com
There’s a few cool plugins from Profound Effects. They used to offer a plugin called “PE_Transfer AVX,” which offered honest-to-goodness transfer modes in-software, via an AVX plugin. It was sold to a competitor of this site and I can’t tell you the name of it on this forum. I suggest dropping an email to PE and asking them where to acquire it (it’s free). Or, even easier, drop me an email to therealjakester1 AT hotmail DOT com (no spaces, and use & and . instead of the words “AT” and “DOT”) and I’ll tell you where to get it. https://www.profoundeffects.com
Red Giant Software has some neat stuff, including “Magic Bullet Editors AVX” suite (the looks presets from the Magic Bullet Suite for Adobe After Effects). Check them out. https://www.redgiantsoftware.com
Digital Film Tools has some cool plugins, too. Composite Suite, 55mm and Digital Film Lab (DFT’s version of Magic Bullet Editors) are incredible. Download the demo for Composite Suite and you get the DFT Fast Blur plugin for free…it’s an indispensible blur plugin that’s sorely missing from Avid’s Effect Palette (though with integrated BCC, you’ll be okay). https://www.digitalfilmtools.com
3Prong makes some interesting effects plugins, too. With your native Timewarp/Fluidmotion effects, you won’t need “SpeedRamp,” which is kind of a weird plugin, anyway…at least the interface is. https://www.3prong.com
You also might consider the Studio Toolkit HD for Adrenaline. It adds Avid FX (Boris Red 3GL under an Avid name), Avid 3D (basic 3D animation/FX app, based off of softimage 3D technology) and Avid DVD (Sonic DVD Producer under an Avid name…not the best solution, but better than nothing).
That should keep you busy for a while. 🙂

With the new Symphony Nitris coming out this year, you’ll have complete “Total Conform” of your XPro projects. In other words, whatever you create in XPro will transfer exactly to Symphony as it was created in XPro (minus 3rd-party effects not installed on the Symphony).
That’s pretty sweet.

To my knowledge, FCP doesn’t have any sort of 3D effects at this time, with the exception of 3D titles through Boris Calligraphy. I’d expect that to change in the next release…it’s rather surprising that Apple hasn’t stuck it in there long ago. Xpress Pro’s 3D FX are pretty cool…especially the 3D PIP (Picture-In-Picture). If you’ve got the bling-bling, do a spring-spring for a higher-end Avid, like Adrenaline. Those systems have 3D Warp, which is essentially the 3D PIP effect with integrated keying, blur, corner pinning and a whole bunch of other goodies. Pretty sweet. The main problem is that Avid DVE’s suffer from some pretty bad anti-aliasing though and we’re all waiting for them to fix it. This problem has been around for some time. Just ask Grinner. 🙂 Avid has claimed they’re working on it.
The laptop looks good. It’s a certified system. Only problem is the Graphics card. Avid specifies the Nvidia Quadro FX Go 1400 with 256MB DDR3. I’d suggest you go with it. In fact, here’s the full-specs of the certified Alienware:

I second what R. Hewitt said. I’d also try trashing your MCState file and reinstalling the software. Whether or not that’ll help, I don’t know, but it couldn’t hurt.
Sounds like it might be time to trade in the ‘ole girl and look at a newer one. Considered a DS Nitris Editor or a Symphony Nitris yet?

For standard DV editing, either a desktop or laptop will be for the most part the same. The big difference with a laptop is that it’s portable, so you can be editing your project while you’re flying on an airliner or riding the bus/subway home. You can take your project to work and edit on your lunch break. It’s a wonderful thing to have. The bad thing about laptops is that there’s only so much room in those little things and you’ll have more storage and more powerful hardware available to you in a desktop. Other than that, both are fine.
If you want to use hardware to work with your editing software (like Avid Mojo with Xpress Pro), you’ll want to go with a desktop system.
