This ole Symphony is on it’s last legs.
It’s the only one I’ve ever worked on with this prob but it’s becomeing more frequent now.
I’ll be editing along and then randomly, I’ll get an exeption error and everything is offline. I have to ditch the database files, let the system rebuild em for 20 minutes then rock on. That’s now that I have Avid drives…. when I had Medea drives, the media just never came back. As a matter of fact, it would knock thje whole drive offline, even from the desk top and I’d have to restripe it.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this? It’s been happening since the birth of this Symphony I imagine as my error logs on NT are now full. I a message saying they are full when I reboot.
Any trouble shooting tips would be greatly appriciated. This is getting expensive.

    Hi Grin,

It’s safe to clear your error log messages. If you can backup your media and database it would be worth while re-formatting the drive(s). There are a whole host of possible causes including media errors on the drive platter that increase with age. A full format (rather than Quick Format) will look for surface media errors and map around them guaranteeing data integrity across the drive. If you then restore your media and database (worth a rebuild straight after restoring) and the problems continue you can start to rule out the drives as being the problem and start looking for other causes.

If you can, give this a try and let us know how you get on.

    Richard.

    Grinner-

I thought you’d died or something! Haven’t seen you post for ages.

I second what R. Hewitt said. I’d also try trashing your MCState file and reinstalling the software. Whether or not that’ll help, I don’t know, but it couldn’t hurt.

Sounds like it might be time to trade in the ‘ole girl and look at a newer one. Considered a DS Nitris Editor or a Symphony Nitris yet?

Good to see you’re still around.

Are you using SCSI or Fiber Channel storage? If you are on SCSI, are you sure that your storage can run fast enough to feed Symphony? Avid went to Fiber Channel with the introduction of Symphony because SCSI wasn’t fast enough to support multiple streams of uncompressed video.

Your symptoms sound to me like a misconfigured or malfunctioning SCSI bus, which can cause all kinds of grief similar to what you are experiencing.

Check for proper terminations (also correct type of terminator — LVD, HVD, SCSI-2, differential, etc.), no duplicate SCSI addresses.

We had a Sonic DVD Creator that lost its media & needed to have the drives reformatted every half hour until the correct terminator was installed on the SCSI bus.

I hope some of this points you in the right direction.

Man, I get to reformat that those drives about every two years weather they need it or not. This means it aint due for another 18 months! Seriously, I can’t take everything oiffline and won’t be able to for a while. I’m always looking for a window of opportunity for that. Since I don’t seem to find em, this ole girl is just providing em, I guess.

    thanks for the help, man.

dead? Man, I speacialize in cheating death. Just been buried in work. I’ve become a very dull boy… all work n no play.
I’m not really looking at DS Nitris or BS Nitris. DS Editor wouldn’t make sense for me, DS is just too expensive for me and Symphony Nitris is well, not even funny.
I’ll end up goin with Adrenaline once it supports HDV natively. Gonna try to milk it till then.
as if I havn’t been milkin’ it for the last two years.

ever notice how ya push buttons more gently when yer box is illin? I’ve been doin the one finger slow-motion button pushin “cmon baby, hang in there” thang.
    lol

Hi Grinner, There is one way you can do a thourough maintenance on your drives without losing data to performa a complete format (low level). This process takes time and I suggest you run it when you have atleast 6 to 7 hrs free time. Go to Start > Run > type “cmd” and click on enter > this will open the command prompt. > Type CD\ and enter > Enter the Drive Letter for eg., Z: and enter > now type “chkdsk/R” > the system will ask you if you want to force a dismount of the volume > Type “N” for no > enter. Now the system will ask you if you want to schedule this disk check when the system restarts ? Type “Y” for yes. > Now type “exit” and this window will close. Restart your computer and windows will perform a complete disk maintenance. Good luck
