I learned by myself how to edit on an Avid Media composer in the late 90s when I was an intern, and never had any problems (technically). It was on an NT system as much as I can remember. Later I got a job editing on a Media 100 on a Powermac G3 . . constantly crashed, but then it was also extremely old, but it still had it’s good moments. Then I moved to editing on a Discreet Edit 6.0 on an NT system. And now I am editing on a G5/FCPHD configuration. I’m not saying all this to brag, but to say that so far I have prefered editing on Windows/PC configurations.

I’m like Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder though. Not nearly as handsome, but he said he knew how to drive cars, but knew nothing about them (his character). And that’s me with editing. I sit down and learn any program I am on, but the minute something technical goes wrong I can admit that I’m a dummy. I call the vendor for help.

Saying that , I do not know how to configure my own editing system which is what I am interested in doing now. I see pop up ads for Avid constantly, and I remember my good experiences on one in the past. But I do not want to spend 30K on a full system. I’d like to start out doing DV work first. Can somebody email me, or just post here, a good affordable configuration for an Avid DV system if one is made for DV? The only HD work I might be doing any time soon would be HDV, and I’ve been told by people who have used it that I might want to just stick with DV for now, since HDV really is not that great??

I’m not interested in huge flat screen monitors that are HD at first or any huge pretty mac displays . . I just want the basics with cost to get started.

Sorry for the rambling, and thanks for any info

BUT . . one opinion from some I would like is . . I’ve heard some say not to bother with getting a NLE system on a Lap Top . . and some say it’s the best thing since sliced bread. I nearly bought a G4 Powerbook with FCP on it . . then hesitated.

For standard DV editing, either a desktop or laptop will be for the most part the same. The big difference with a laptop is that it’s portable, so you can be editing your project while you’re flying on an airliner or riding the bus/subway home. You can take your project to work and edit on your lunch break. It’s a wonderful thing to have. The bad thing about laptops is that there’s only so much room in those little things and you’ll have more storage and more powerful hardware available to you in a desktop. Other than that, both are fine.

If you want to use hardware to work with your editing software (like Avid Mojo with Xpress Pro), you’ll want to go with a desktop system.
