I got one of those Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drives, with 2GB RAM and 500GB of storage (for something like $99.00). When all I had on it was Windows it brought me to a desktop in maybe 20 seconds. Now with all of my other software it takes maybe more like 45 seconds (and really more like a minute and something before it really comes all the way up), but it sure beats just a plain spin drive hands down, any day.

I understand that an SSD for C: really speeds things up (something like 7 seconds to a desktop with a fresh install of Windows) but I am trying to save on costs where I can (because I blow it so many other places, haha, lol).

[John Rofrano] “Funny you should mention Linux. I’m using Ubuntu Linux on my laptop right now as I type this. I have Windows 7 64-bit running in a VMware virtual machine with Vegas Pro 10d on it. ;-)”

I have wanted to check out Linux for a long time. Just as soon as I find time to finish going through my VASST DVD’s to learn Vegas… and Ultimate S… and Production Assistant… and CS5… and Boris RED 4… and finish writing a few of more books… then I will jump right on it! (haha lol!!!!)

But are the editing tools in Linux even close to what is available in Vegas? I get the feeling they cannot possibly be, which is why I have not made it a higher priority. Am I wrong?

    >> Basically what’s wrong with vista and 7 is it’s functionality/user adjustments are taken away by Microsoft. They will decide what you want!.

Well, not exactly. Like any car manufacturer, they decide what they want to sell, based on what they believe they majority of the people will buy. But the cash-flow thing also gets into the mix, and you won’t change that. It just won’t happen. As a friend of mine used to say, “It is better to put on one pair of slippers, than to try to carpet the whole world.”

John and Mike deserve thanks. They are both volunteering their time and expertise in an effort to help others who feel that the balance of the time/money equation favors buying into the “current OS/ application package” that is called Sony Vegas. Yes, it does come as a pre-defined package, and for practical reasons (of money and other business expediencies) it is pretty much a “take it or leave it” offer. (Put your slippers on, ha ha.)

If for whatever reason you do not enjoy the “current OS/application package” construct, and/or you are willing to trade away significant amounts of time in order to save money, then have you considered Linux? While most people do not choose to go that path, could it be just the pair of slippers you are looking for?

Also, do you have a guess as to how long it might take to create a four minute cartoon like this one?

    Thanks.

    Hi John.

How are you doing? I have been doing some basic drawing.

If I wanted to make a video similar to this one (but with different content), would Anime Studio Debut still be the best tool?

(Also, would I need one of those Wacom tablets?)

    Thanks.

    Hey Peter.

Just to follow up, the lines on the 1.4 are very close to straight.

It is close enough I don’t feel the need to ‘take anything out.’ I will probably just deal with the lines by creative framing, and/or perhaps the creative use of fake foliage in order to camouflage the relatively minor curves in my new prime. : ]

    Thanks.

I have a Canon 5DM2 body, an F2.8L 16-35mm zoom and an F4L 24-105mm zoom. Right now I am doing some talking-head stuff in front of a bookcase, and the vertical lines are bowed. I shoot at about +/- 50mm. If I get a good 50mm prime, will that remove the distortion?

I am looking at the Canon F1.4L, $379.00. I really like the idea of pulling it out of a box, putting it on, and using all of the stock Canon features without another learning curve. But now you guys are filling my head with talk of inexpensive used Nikon primes on EBay, and adapters. How big a deal is it to figure out how to use those? And what tradeoffs am I making by saving the +/- $250-300.00?

February 8, 2011 at 2:11 am in reply to: Gearshift?

John, how does GearShift work? Is it a converter? Or a swapper?

I guess what I really need to know is, do I need the copy of GearShift here, so I can make proxy files and send them to him? Or does my editor need the GearShift there, so he can not only create the proxy files, but also swap them in and out?
