Gearshift?
A friend wants to help edit video. He has a Dell XPS 410 with a Pentium D (Dual Core) at 2.8GHz, Vista x64 and 8GB RAM. (Dell does not make Windows 7 drivers for it, since it is an older box.)
Since it is (only) a dual core, will he likely want something like VASST Gearshift to make proxy files for editing (and then he can bring in the full HD files for the render)?
Also, will there likely be any issues with SVP10, VASST Gearshift and VASST InfinityCAM on a Pentium D?

There shouldn’t be. GearShift was designed specifically for people with older computers that can’t use CineForm or other solutions because their computers aren’t powerful enough. If he can edit DV, he can use GearShift. Have him try it for 15-days free to see if he likes it.

Hi John.
I just need to double-check something.
Does VASST GearShift work with DSLR files (Canon 5D Mark II)?
The anticipated workflow would be to make a GearShift file of the 5DM2 files for editing, and then render the DSLR files with SVP10.
Also, any issues using Boris FX, New Blue FX or chromakey with GearShift files? (If we did Chromakey we would probably convert to Cineform .avi first, but I am not sure yet.)

Yes, it should work fine. GearShift supports *.m2t, *.mts, *.m2ts, *.mxf, *.mp4, *.mov, *..r3d, and *.veg files.

You probably want to set your chroma key to your HD files. HD has way more information than the DV proxies that GearShift makes. Just set the chroma key while using HD files, then shift gears for normal SD editing and then shift back to HD again before rendering.

John, how does GearShift work? Is it a converter? Or a swapper?
I guess what I really need to know is, do I need the copy of GearShift here, so I can make proxy files and send them to him? Or does my editor need the GearShift there, so he can not only create the proxy files, but also swap them in and out?

It’s both. It will convert your HD footage into proxies and swap them back and forth with the HD files.

I would think that the editor would want GearShift so that they can create proxies and swap them whenever they want.
