Vegas 10 won’t install on XP 64
Posted by Steve Browne on January 5, 2011 at 4:57 pmI’ve tried installing Vegas 10c on my XP Pro 64-bit system. According to Sony’s specs the 64-bit version should install; however, I get an immediate error message, “This software requires that you have Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3…”. XP Pro 64-bit only has a Service Pack 2; Service Pack 3 is for 32-bit XP. How can I proceed?

I’m not sure what “specs” you are referring to but XP64 is not supported. (by anyone… including Microsoft) According to the Sony Technical specifications page, the supported platforms are:
- Microsoft® Windows® XP 32-bit SP3
- Windows Vista® 32-bit or 64-bit SP2
- or Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit
No mention of XP 64-bit (which is why it won’t install).

January 5, 2011 at 5:53 pmI’ve submitted the question directly to Sony, but if it won’t install on XP64 it is the ONLY 64-bit version software I’ve ever come across that won’t. So I’ll have to stick to Vegas 9.0. I’m perfectly comfortable with XP Pro 64.

Question
Do any of the Sony Creative Software applications work with Windows XP x64?
Answer
Sony Creative Software applications are officially supported only under the operating systems explicitly listed in the system requirements section of the product’s web page or product documentation. While it may be possible to install and run the product using an unlisted operating system, this use is unsupported. No technical or other support can be provided to you if you are using the product on an unsupported operating system.

You should probably get ready to see more of this. Obviously Sony requires a fix to Windows XP that is in SP3 but will never see XP64 because it’s unsupported by Microsoft. You can’t expect any application provider to support an OS that the maker of the OS itself no longer supports. As applications use more and more features that are not in XP64 you will see more and more applications not installing.
I realize that you are comfortable with XP64 but you have to realize that Microsoft is not, and they have abandoned that platform and you should too.

January 5, 2011 at 8:43 pmQuoting from Sony via Mike Kujbida: “While it may be possible to install and run the product using an unlisted operating system, this use is unsupported.”
This is an UNofficial forum, so I am not seeking the Doctrine of manufacturers’ acolytes. Sony admits that it is POSSIBLE to install Vegas 10 on XP Pro 64; the question I am asking to be addressed is, how? Attempting to install the executable immediately produces the error message I quoted, so it is initially just reading the code designation of the operating system (as opposed to analyzing the OS structure). Suppose I temporarily changed that designation to “Vista 64″… how might I do that, to see what happens?
BTW, manufacturers’ “support” is not something I concern myself with. A quick Web search turns up answers to most questions.

January 5, 2011 at 9:01 pmSteve, I’m a Vegas user, not an acolyte.
You asked a question and got answers from both John and me.
They’re obviously not want you wanted to hear and I don’t appreciate the snide comment.
A quick search turned up this thread on the Sony Vegas forum.
Be advised that there’s no guarantee that it will work so, if you do try it, make sure you have everything backed up first. -

January 5, 2011 at 9:09 pmMike, I didn’t intend a snide comment. The fact is, Vegas 10 is the *only* Windows 64-bit supposedly professional software I’ve come across which won’t (officially) install on XP Pro 64. In comparison, for example, there is no problem installing Autodesk Maya 2011 for Windows 64.
Thanks for the link.

January 5, 2011 at 10:01 pmFYI the registry hack suggested in Mike’s link does NOT solve the problem, but it is the right avenue of approach, which I will continue working on.

I guess I am not clear why you just don’t install Windows 7 x64 Home Premium OEM, and be done with the problem???

January 6, 2011 at 3:46 amI didn’t realize that you https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/208/877554 until now.
Hopefully you will find a way to make it work for you. I don’t quite understand why you would want to go through all the trouble to get it to work via a hack when you could just upgrade to a supported OS… or like you said earlier, continue to use Pro 9.
