May 19, 2011 at 7:18 pm[John Rofrano] “Funny you should mention Linux. I’m using Ubuntu Linux on my laptop right now as I type this. I have Windows 7 64-bit running in a VMware virtual machine with Vegas Pro 10d on it. ;-)”
I have wanted to check out Linux for a long time. Just as soon as I find time to finish going through my VASST DVD’s to learn Vegas… and Ultimate S… and Production Assistant… and CS5… and Boris RED 4… and finish writing a few of more books… then I will jump right on it! (haha lol!!!!)
But are the editing tools in Linux even close to what is available in Vegas? I get the feeling they cannot possibly be, which is why I have not made it a higher priority. Am I wrong?

May 20, 2011 at 3:21 amI haven’t really used Linux for video editing to I don’t know what the tools are like. I’m perfectly happy with Vegas.
You can download and burn a Linux Live CD and try Linux without having to do anything except reboot your computer. My brother-in-law was plagued with Windows slowdowns and malware and viruses and he switched to Ubuntu Linux and he couldn’t be happier. He surfs the web and uses his email with no more threats. My son uses it on his NetBook computer. You turn it and and in a few seconds you’re on the web. Windows is a slow lumbering sloth by comparison.

June 1, 2011 at 3:17 amI got one of those Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drives, with 2GB RAM and 500GB of storage (for something like $99.00). When all I had on it was Windows it brought me to a desktop in maybe 20 seconds. Now with all of my other software it takes maybe more like 45 seconds (and really more like a minute and something before it really comes all the way up), but it sure beats just a plain spin drive hands down, any day.
I understand that an SSD for C: really speeds things up (something like 7 seconds to a desktop with a fresh install of Windows) but I am trying to save on costs where I can (because I blow it so many other places, haha, lol).

June 29, 2011 at 2:31 pmHi everyone,
I am being inundated this week with invitations to upgrade for $191 to Sony Vegas 10. SHOULD I DO IT???? It sounds like great value…?
uh oh… I too am an XP64 user with version 8.1. And I too spent a few years getting it JUST RIGHT for my little world….
And I realize I am going to be blasted for saying this, but I would much rather ANY DAY OF THE WEEK run an OS with 32 processes rather than 60+ (most of which are irrelavant to everyone apart from microsoft).
And wow, it even supports my 12GB ram.
It’s nothing to do with paranoia – I run w7 on two other laptops. They spend all day patching themselves, running processes that noone has a clue about 🙂 But if I want a clean, effective, non-invasive, uncluttered OS with support for >4MB RAM, XP64 is really the only Windows “desktop” platform that will do it. Just my opinion! please don’t hate me :-)!!
So I basically have to decide by tomorrow. The offer ends 6/30 and I really want to go to v10.
Will the registry hacks work? I will do anything to keep my beloved XP64 alive!!!
best wishes everyone!

June 29, 2011 at 4:19 pmI didn’t find any hack that worked on XP Pro 64. I advise you to study the Vegas features to see if there are really any reasons to upgrade to 10. In your case it would make more sense to upgrade to 9.

July 14, 2012 at 4:25 amHi,
sorry for bringing this up again, but I just found what worked for me:
Install Vegas under a supported system (e.g. Win 7). Then simply boot Win XP x64 and run it. Works without an actuall install! You just have to put in the registration info again.
Hope that works for you!
Did that with Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.
