January 6, 2011 at 4:27 pmAgain, the core question is whether this is a LEGAL issue or a CODING issue. If it is a legal issue I’d have no qualms about hacking the install restrictions, since I pay no attention to software publisher “support” anyway.

It is first and foremost a LEGAL issue. Sony cannot guarantee their customers support if they can’t get support from the code that they depend on. It doesn’t make good business sense. That alone is all you need.
As for CODING, some fix in SP3 is probably required otherwise Sony would not have made it a hard prerequisite. Of course, that could be a LEGAL issue too. I don’t know if Microsoft supports XP SP2 anymore? So it may be Microsoft’s support that’s requiring SP3 on XP. I don’t know.
I gotta tell ya’… I was a die-hard XP fan and I hated Vista but when I tried Windows 7, it was a whole different story. You really should carve out a little partition space and give it a try. It’s a really great OS. (not as good as Linux but I’m a Linux bigot.) 😉

Your afterthought has sold me on your honesty. I’ll look into Windows 7.

I think you’ll like it. The interface is a bit different so give it some time but you’ll get use to it. In fact, the windows explorer looks a lot like the Gnome Nautilus interface on Ubuntu Linux that I’m use to so it wasn’t a bad transition for me. Of course, you can make it look just like XP if you want (the old Classic look is still there for those want it)
Let us know how you make out.

January 15, 2011 at 9:45 amThat’s pretty much what it’s all about. Money. Creating a reliable product that meets all the needs of the consumer is of no interest to a corporation. It’s really about them figuring out how much of a product should work and how much shouldn’t. That’s why cars are built to break unlike the cars of yesterday. The consumer is nothing more than part of the cycle of profit. HA!
I will say this in regards to Windows XP 64-bit. Windows 7 is junk software that through clever marketing has effectively blinded many consumers. IT SUCKS!

May 19, 2011 at 6:04 amI have many comments about this thread! First of all I have successfully installed Vegas 10d on xp 64 bit. I’ll tell you how later. But what really irks me about Sony, is that I bought Sound Forge 10. The A and B versions installed on xp 64 bit, but the the C update did not. Now I can understand that the new Vegas 10 did not support the old 64 bit xp, but how can they stop support of a product I bought, in mid stream? So from now on, I won’t be buying anymore Sony products. And XP 64 bit is so much better than Vista and 7, which are bloated eye candy operating systems. Yes they can be tweaked to be a lot like xp, but they they can never beat xp 64 bit. I could go into great detail on this, but I’ll leave that for another time. But let me say one thing that makes windows 7 unusable. That is the search function. Even with every registry tweak and the included search adjustments, it will never find certain files., because they are in the wrong locations or super hidden files. If you can’t trust a search, what good is it? Basically what’s wrong with vista and 7 is it’s functionality/user adjustments are taken away by Microsoft. They will decide what you want!. Now back to the way I got Vegas 10d and Sound Forge 10C in 64 bit XP. I loaded a fresh 64 bit Windows 7. I installed 10d vegas and Sound Forge 10C. I then installed PCmover pro. This programs function is to migrate programs from an old operating system, like xp, to a newer one, like vista or 7. It takes the program file stuff, along with the registry entries and puts them on another computer, so you don’t have to reload them. So I did everything backwards. When it asked for the old computer programs I wanted to move, I was using the windows 7 computer. I took only Vegas 10d and Sound Forge 10c, from the old computer[windows 7 one]. Take no other files/programs. So I unchecked every other program/files in the settings of PCmover and made a file called the “moving van” file. You can put this on a flash drive. This file has the 10d and sf 10c info on it. Now I went to my XP 64 bit computer, with no Sony products on it. Make sure all your drivers for that computer are installed.i.e. sound/video etc. This was the so called new computer,i.e. the computer I was upgrading to. But of course, I’m doing it backwards. So, I installed PCmoving pro. Then, when you start the program, it asks for the “moving van” file. I grabbed it right off my flash drive and after a reboot, vegas 10d and sound forge 10c worked flawlessly. They even remained registered.. The only oddity that occurred ,by merging the 2 operating systems, was that in the control panel of Windows, I lost the system ,add/remove programs and a few other icons/categories. But I fixed them with a simple registry tweak.. The CPL files were still in the System 32 folder and started fine, but had been hidden in the control panel. This may not happen on your computer. I have used the XP64 bit operating system for several days, and everything is working great.

Don’t shoot the messenger.
As has been mentioned numerous times in this thread, Sony NEVER supported 64 bit XP so you’re on your own. -

Here is what you are missing. Sony does not test with XP64 because they don’t support it so they probably have no idea that anything broke. So Sony did not “stop support”. There never was support. You were lucky it worked at all.
I believe the reason it broke is because Sony needed bug fixes from Microsoft that is in Service Pack 3 and because Microsoft no longer supports XP64 there is no SP3 so actually… Microsoft broke your Sony software so please complain to THEM! (like they will listen)

Well, not exactly. Like any car manufacturer, they decide what they want to sell, based on what they believe they majority of the people will buy. But the cash-flow thing also gets into the mix, and you won’t change that. It just won’t happen. As a friend of mine used to say, “It is better to put on one pair of slippers, than to try to carpet the whole world.”
John and Mike deserve thanks. They are both volunteering their time and expertise in an effort to help others who feel that the balance of the time/money equation favors buying into the “current OS/ application package” that is called Sony Vegas. Yes, it does come as a pre-defined package, and for practical reasons (of money and other business expediencies) it is pretty much a “take it or leave it” offer. (Put your slippers on, ha ha.)
If for whatever reason you do not enjoy the “current OS/application package” construct, and/or you are willing to trade away significant amounts of time in order to save money, then have you considered Linux? While most people do not choose to go that path, could it be just the pair of slippers you are looking for?

Funny you should mention Linux. I’m using Ubuntu Linux on my laptop right now as I type this. I have Windows 7 64-bit running in a VMware virtual machine with Vegas Pro 10d on it. 😉
