Yes, an option for those toolbar items to be top/bottom is all that is needed. This way each can work how it works best for them.

Vegas has options for the window docking tabs to be top/bottom, so why not toolbar(s).

  • Tom’s and Anandtech are excellent review sites.

One thing to remember when looking at “workstation” application reviews and video cards. In this article nearly all applications there is some sort of 3D modeling application. Performance in this, OpenGL task, does not necessarily translate to compute only type GPU use, OpenCL.

Anandtech uses Vegas in their video card benchmarks recently.

Nvidia Kepler cards are the current Kings of 3D rendering. Games and “workstation” applications. AMD is the current King of OpenCL compute. Those are generalizations and that is now. Tomorrow, things can change.

The intel CPU would certainly make a difference. There was a day when AMD was better but once Intel changed directions after the Pentium 4 they have left AMD in their rear view mirror.

Still a 3.3Ghz AMD CPU sounds reasonable but I have no direct way to compare. I had a core i7 860 2.8Ghz CPU before and it edited video just fine. Even some 1080p60 stuff.

Nothing guaranteed to always be smooth. You seem to have a pretty good setup so most things should most times be smooth. I say that based on things *I* have edited and are normally smooth.

To go any further you need to provide information as to exactly what your situation is.

What is your source material. A MediaInfo spec list is the ultimate info here. Otherwise, resolution, video codec, bitrate, progressive/interlace would be nice.

    Your project settings.
    You preview window setting.
Internal preview only or internal and external preview.
Where are the source media stored. Internal HD, external HD, network.

Does it still hiccup with an empty project with just one clip which you split and create a crossfade?

I noticed the video file you uploaded in AVC video with AAC audio. It has an MP4 extension but it is actually a Quicktime file, aka MOV. I know underneath the covers the two formats are nearly identical twins, but I said nearly, and that is why the header says Quicktime and not a true mpeg-4.

Vegas special cases Quicktime files which have AVC video and PCM audio. For those files Vegas uses it own internal decoders, which will give better performance. Otherwise Vegas will go through Quicktime and not we are opened up to performance and/or compatibility issues.

Also the QT AVC decoder is known to add a little noise to decodes. This is fine for playback of low bitrate video but not something we want for camera video.

The later is a reason why Vegas, Premiere and maybe others bypass Quicktime in some cases. All DSLRs and digicams typically output MOV with AVC video and PCM audio and these people want high quality decodes.

To get past the problem without encoding the video you can use something like Avidemux to remux the Quicktime MP4/MOV format into a true MP4 file. Vegas does support AVC video and AAC audio in actual MP4 files with its internal decoders. GoPro files are in this format.

There are many cameras that record 25/30p but encode it is 50/60i. When you use match media Vegas should still identify the material as progressive since that is how it is encoded.

To get to progressive you still need to deinterlace the media. However since it was recorded as progressive you should be able to get a “perfect” deinterlace. You should be able to use the Blend deinterlace mode and get excellent results event with fast motion material. The field order is still important but using the project match media button or letting Vegas match media on the first media added to your project, Vegas should get that parameter correct for you.

It does not matter what your preview window size is. When you use the snapshot button you get an image that is the same size as your project settings. I am assuming you are using the Vegas snapshot button which is in the top portion of the preview window.

For more info you can enter the word, snapshot, into the Vegas helpo file index tab. This is what the help topic on, “Save the current frame as a file”, says,

Click the Save Snapshot to File button to save the current frame as an image file.

You can change the size of the image using the Preview Quality button: choose Auto or Full to capture the frame at its full resolution, or choose Half or Quarter to capture a smaller image.

The Save Snapshot to File dialog is displayed to allow you to choose the format and location where you want to save the file. The file is automatically added to the Project Media window.

As long as you preview mode is set to auto it will always go best-full when you press the snapshot button.

When I have had preview set to half or quarter I noticed I did not get full size stills. Typically for me that means 1920×1080. I say this from memory, and I think this is a quirk. It probably should still switch to best-full when you have specifically set half/quarter. Maybe they intended it that way.

You can always set the preview window manually to best-full and then snapshot and then go back to what you had before. You should not need to do this, but as a last resort this should always get you what you want.

  • What does the free MediaInfo utility say about your WAV file(s)?

I have imported a multi track WAV file into Vegas 12 B770. I only tried this once with one file so that may not mean much.

So I downloaded a sample file from this site and it loads for me. I downloaded the 8 track 48K sample. Does this file load for you?

Just download the trial the first day to test and play and enter your reg code later when you finally purchase and get it.
