The Vegas smart proxy feature always creates 1280×720 files. Also the files are marked as 24p, but no frame rate resampling occurs so if you look you will see the length gets longer. This proxy frame rate is meaningless. The proxy is played back at source file frame rate.

The Vegas smart proxies are XDCAM EX 35Mbps files. By encoding at a fake 24fps, the proxy has more bitrate for higher quality.

As you noticed with frame rates higher than 24 you can get a multiplication factor on file size. Also the 35Mbps bitrate may be higher than your camera source.

The proxy feature is not really about smaller proxy files, but rather files which are easily decoded for playback performance. The XDCAM EX mpeg-2 files are super fast to decode.

Vegas will actually accept any of its input formats as a proxy file. The Vegas feature will only do it one way. I have used the Vegasaur utility to create smart proxies in other formats. Quality seems best with 720 proxies. I have created 60p proxies to keep the big 2.5x file size increase down. I have stuck with the XDCAM EX format.

If you want to keep the proxy file size down, you can do this manually as well. Just render a 1280×720 50p file, without audio, and rename it to the proper format for Vegas.

  • Avid does Alpha inverted from what most everyone else does.

If the Alpha channel coming in from a DNxHD is in “avid” format, aka Inverted, then all you need to is Invert the alpha channel using Mask Generator, select the alpha channel and check invert. This is for files coming into Vegas.

Sorry, my bad for misreading your post visavie Blu-ray.

For DVD use one of the DVD Architect templates. NTSC or PAL depending on your location. In this case, in the US, DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen.

I would still edit in the native format of your source video footage. By this I mean your project properties as previously mentioned.

Your project properties should match your source video properties. You can use the match media properties button in the project properties window to do this automatically. Otherwise 1920×1080 29.97fps, progressive, pixel aspect ratio 1.0.

Since you are targeting Blu-ray you cannot use 30p so you would use 60i. A Blu-ray 1920×1080-60i template is a good choice.

Since you are going Blu-ray you can use mpeg-2 or AVC templates (Sony AVC or Mainconcept AVC).

It sounds like you have the fx window docked in the same area as the preview window. You can undock the fx window and leave it undocked(floating) or dock it somewhere else.

I usually leave mine docked in the same group as project media.

Also, you need to have the current 1.9.4 version to work in Vegas 13.

  • I remember reading something about AJA stuff in the release notes under known issues.

“When using an AJA SDI device, AJA driver version 10.1 is required for audio and video preview. Do not use driver version 10.3.”

Would this be applicable to your situation.

Here is an article on the HiDPI monitor thing. They talk about the various options various versions of Windows has had for applications to try and function properly.

    https://www.anandtech.com/show/7939/scaling-windows-the-dpi-arms-race

If Vegas stated it was DPI aware and did not self adjust their icons and such due to this, then shame on Sony. At least when an app does not declare itself, you don’t get the micro UI features. Not ideal but better than nothing.

  • Youtube can do HTML5, not this option needs to be selected. They typically default to their classic flash based video.

Just right click the video window and see if you get an About menu item for a flash player.
