I can’t help you there. I try to avoid Video for Windows like the plague. It was depreciated in 1995 and it just won’t die and go away.

I do use Sony YUV at times as an intermediate to Handbrake. I think I have tried playing back a few times, uncompressed and Cineform, and don’t remember any problem. Not enough testing to make any conclusions.

The media player I use is Media Player Classic Home cinema, installed via K-lite Standard edition.

My playback renders are all AVC MP4 files.

Here is a Vegas 12/13 project file showing a pan.

The only native codecs in Vegas which are 4:2:2 that I remember are

Sony MXF HD422 8-bit (this is what your cam is outputting)
    HDCAM SR 422 or 444 10-bit
    XAVC Intra. 10-bit

These are all limited to 48Khz. PCM output.
HDCAM SR and XAVC Intra being high bitrate intermediate formats.

Video for Windows, Sony YUV is 422 and allows 96Khz PCM but this is uncompressed video. Other than the subsampling of course.

Mainconcept AVC allows 96Khz AAC compressed output, but it is 4:2:0.

[David McCormick] “with possibly 10-bit colors as I’d prefer better than 8-bit since vegas edits with 32-bit color range”

Your camera is 8-bit output. 10-bit output/edit does not really give you anything.

Use pan/crop and use keyframes for animation panning around the image.

The list is fixed in size and removing something will not cause something older to re-appear. The list is populated as you open projects. If you select a project which has been deleted/moved then, you get an error opening and it will simply be removed from the list and the list will contain one item less than before.

If you are using the Titles and Text plug-in change the anchor point to the left side. The align left/center/right buttons align relative to the anchor point. T&T coordinates are relative to the bottom left corner.

In you are using Protype titler then this is the center item on the transform tab. Protype coordinates are relative to the screen center.

If you are using another titler, you will have to manually align the left sides since their anchor point is always the center.

    AppData is a hidden folder.

  • I doubt it would make a difference. JPG files are pretty generic. The aspect ratio of phone photos can be quite different from your video aspect ratio. That is the only thing I can think of that you will have to handle.

My one slideshow project was 4:3 since that is what the digicam ratio was but I was given a number of phone photos. Some iPhone and some not.

  • Vegas can have playback performance issues if your photos are quite large and you have pan/zoom/rotates on the photos.

[Rachelle Perkins] ” I have matched the property settings of the project to one of the images in the project (advice from tech support at Vegas”

This does not make sense to me. Photos are still images and you are editing a video. For example, stills do not have a frame rate and your stills are probably much larger than you intended video size.

What are your project settings? Size, frame rate, interlace.

What is the size of your typical JPG? Unless you have resized them, they are probably big when straight from the camera.

To get good playback performance in a slideshow project I did, I resized the images to 2400×1800 (4MP) from 4000×3000 (12MP). My project was 1440×1080 so the 1800 size was big enough for some good sized crops. A few photos I left full size since they had very large crops.

You can always crop as much as you want, but for MAX quality you do not want your crops to go smaller than the project dimension.

You can resize in your photo editor of choice or the free Irfanview program. In Photoshop and Irfanview you can batch resize all photos.

  • [Mike Kujbida] “Norman, my audio tab for Pro 10 and 12 looks identical to yours.

To both of you, do you have the Import stereo as dual mono option enabled in Options > Prefs > General?”

No my prefs for Import MXF as multi-channel and Import stereo as dual mono are both unchecked.

Your MediaInfo dumps show that you also get separate audio channels in the MXF file for the left and right stereo channels.

Of course Vegas is able to import the dual channels as a stereo channel. Most NLE’s are probably able to handle this.

Cedric mentioned using intermediates to Handbrake, and my original post stated that MXF gets two audio channels for stereo and that Handbrake cannot handle two separate channels and treat it as stereo. As Cedric pointed out, some video players also cannot handle this Vegas MXF file (MXF in general?) audio behavior.
