Sony says it is not a replacement to Vegas. Catalyst is a separate product line.

On another note, the feature set of Catalyst Edit is so minimal it cannot be a replacement for Vegas.

[Jim Leonard] “I’ve been poking at this nest to see if there where any Sony programmers here. I see this “Creative” Cow is more on the user side. I was hoping to get some changes made to Vegas”

To suggest feature addition/changes you should use the suggestion page.

SCS developers do read forum posts on the Sony forums, but they very rarely interact in threads.

Hope to get some changes made… is frankly unrealistic. All you can do is get your vote(s) in on ideas, as one minnow in the pond, and hope enough other users are doing the same to get SCS management to consider an addition or possibly a change.

  • AMD 5xxx series cards are certainly compatible. I used to have a 5850.

  • Vegas does special case some MOV file contents and use its own internal decoders. AVC/H.264 video and PCM audio is the case I know about. Your problem file is AAC audio.

You can remux the AVC video and AAC audio into an MP4 file. Vegas will open that combo directly. I know because that is what my GoPro outputs. My DSLR is AVC+PCM in MOV and Vegas opens directly.

If the media is listed in Project media you can…
Right click the media and choose properties. Select the “general” tab and scroll to the bottom.

    qt7plug…Vegas needs Quicktime installed.
compoundplug…Vegas uses its own internal decoder(s).

  • Selecting multiple media and applying media FX does not apply to all. I do not know of a way to do this in Vegas alone.

Tools like Vegasaur are made to do productivity things like this. I have Vegasaur.

Also, Ultimate S, Excalibur, Timeline Tools (free) likely have these functions.

May 7, 2015 at 8:51 pm in reply to: Can’t Import AVI or MP4 Videos?

[Daniel Mango] “I also tried mp4:
    Size is the same
    FPS is the same
    Codec: MPEG-4”

“MPEG-4” is a meaningless term. A large variety of codecs are technically MPEG-4. AVC/H.264, H.263, DivX, Xvid, ASP, SStp and so on.

The only thing in the MPEG-4 family that Vegas can read in an MP4 container is AVC/H.264. Vegas does not handle Xvid, ASP and so on at all in any container. If something is in an AVI container it is possible to install a Video for Windows codec to handle the format.

In an MP4 container Vegas should be able to handle AVC/H.264 video with AAC audio. It sounds like you might have those options available to you. If not then try converting like John suggested.

Youtube/Video always re-encode your video to their specification regardless of what you upload. Their spec/bitrate may not preserve your source video quality.

May 6, 2015 at 5:06 pm in reply to: DNxHD codec why it is not for commercial use?

[Natalia Pie] “The free ffmpeg libraries That infringe patents MPEG.LA

MPEG.LA told me that if he wants to convert only software licensed from MPEG.LA”

This is not accurate and I do not think you understand the situation fully. Are the the user FotoVideo on the Sony forums asking licensing questions like these? There are plenty of good answers to this given there.

x264 is an open source GPL AVC/H.264 encoder does not need a license since they are not selling you can encoder for AVC. It is just source code. x264 is the AVC encoder used by all open source stuff. If x264 were infringing on any patents they (MPEG.LA) could certainly file a lawsuit to try and shut it down. They have not and they cannot. BTW sites like Youtube and Vimeo have used x264 for AVC encodes. They don’t pay a license since MPEG.LA exempted them a long time ago (free internet delivery site of AVC video).

If you want to sell an AVC video over 12 minutes and you absolutely want to pay your 2 cents to MPEG.LA, then you can figure out how to do that on your own. MPEG.LA has not cared about small operators.

Cliptoolz Convert should be able to do this as well. No need for Quicktime or Avid DNxHD codec install.
