    Yes, the Pro AC-3 encoder which comes with DVD-A Pro, does have more options. Here is a Vegas help topic on the subject of low encoded audio, which only Pro supports.

  • [John Rofrano] “You don’t need to do this in Vegas Pro 13.0. In 13.0 you can control FX’s with a Mask. Just create a Mask in the Pan/Crop tool and set Apply to FX to Yes. This will apply the mask to the FX so you can control where the FX is applied.”

    This feature is in Vegas 12 as well.

    Mainconcept AVC renders AAC for audio and you can render the audio only if that is what you want. It will still be in an MP4 file. Sony AVC can also do audio only renders.

  • The input file format rarely matters. It is generally the encoded destination format (AVC, mpeg-2, DNxHD, etc), and the specific encoding options for said encoder, that determines encoding speed.

    Your best bet for smallest size, and universal playability, is probably AVC/H.264 video. Mainconcept AVC is a choice here. Use two pass mode to possibly improve the quality.

    To get the absolute best quality at the smallest file size you should use the x264 AVC encoder. x264 is a much higher quality encoder than anything else. The Handbrake utility uses x264 and is easy to use.

    Your best option here would be to use the CRF encoding mode. You need to find a CRF value that gives you the general visual quality you like from some tests, then use that for your encodes and the file size will be whatever it comes out to be. CRF is a constant visual quality mode so the final bitrate is unknown.

    You will want to use some high quality intermediate format to encode from Movie Studio and feed to Handbrake.

    If you can drop to 30p from 60p you can save a bunch of file size on fast moving action.

    There is no such thing as an equivalence spec for codecs. Meaning a certain bitrate for codec X equals a certain bitrate for codec Y. Too much ndepends upon the source material. Some codecs are capable of great compression and others not so much. How much compression you get depends upon the source material. The ratio between codec varies greatly.

    For example consider a GoPro attached to a mountain bike bouncing down a trail and camera handle/tripod shooting people walking and talking. The later can get very great compression but certainly not the former. I have direct experience with the former. MTB footage, even stabilized, does not compress very well such that internet delivery bitrates provide good quality. It is just a fact of life and there is nothing I can do about it.

    Also consider that cameras do little compression even if they generate codecs capable for great compression like AVC/H.264. They do not have the compute power or the time to do this level of compression. So they typically need a higher bitrate to achieve a similar quality to a lower bitrate a PC AVC/H.264 encoder can generate. Again, it all depends upon the source material.

    There are no easy answers. Experience matters and your eyes are always the best and only final judge of quality comparing two separate encodes.

  • Yes, 1080p60 output would be the choice to preserve the resolution of the 1080 source and the frame rate of the 720 source.

    The big question is how is this video going to be viewed. 60p does not work so well, if at all, on internet delivery like Youtube/Vimeo. DVD and Blu-ray do not support it. Plugging a flash drive with the video into a TV may not work at 1080p60. 30p yes but I doubt the 60p. This leaves PC computer playback only.

  • It looks like you are talking about audio cuts. This is controlled by the preference, Quick fade length for audio events. Vegas will not let you set that preference to zero.

    You really do typically want these. It helps avoid clicks/pops from abruptly cutting (stop/start) audio.

    AFAIK, The only way to fully eliminate them is to do it manually on each instance.
