Sony Vegas Pro 13 Night Effect? (All Tutorial Videos on the Internet is FALSE)
Posted by Justin Coolidge on May 31, 2015 at 12:24 pmWhat is the REAL way to make a night effect in Sony Vegas Pro? all the results on Google: https://goo.gl/xuRdEx say to use “color corrector” and to input several values, which include numbers over 300, problem is, Sony Vegas doesn’t allow numbers over 270, making every video tutorial telling you to input numbers like 324.3 false.
so how do I really accomplish this task?

It looks like a bug in the Color Corrector in Vegas Pro 13.0. 🙁 Try entering the Magnitude first and then the Angle and it seems to work for me. Vegas Pro 12.0 doesn’t have this problem.
BTW, Color Curves as a Night setting already built in.

May 31, 2015 at 8:05 pmOk, I got the night in, is there any way I can make a certain spot of the video not have the effect, (ie a circular area around a phoenix with fire wings) I need the area around the phoenix not have the night effect. and an Ice bird would also need headlight style lighting (I am making a bird racing night race) (headlights similar to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLcJLFLrWgM )

May 31, 2015 at 10:32 pmSure, duplicate the track. On the top track, delete the night Fx you have applied. Then use masks in the Pan/Crop function so that only selected portions of the video screen on the top track will be displayed. The track below will then be seen with the remainder of the darkened screen. You may have to use keyframes with the masks to keep the mask properly positioned.

Up to VP12, this is how I would have done it, but the new feature in VP13 allows us to have FX-ing restricted to the Mask and that Event, no need to duplicate the Event. This is a valuable, labour and Timeline efficient new feature:-
On the right is a Night CCurves FX, restricted to the right hand side of the Frame.

Yes, you can create a Mask in the Pan/Crop tool and set Apply to FX to Yes. This will apply the mask to the FX so you can control where the FX is applied.

You don’t need to do this in Vegas Pro 13.0. In 13.0 you can control FX’s with a Mask. Just create a Mask in the Pan/Crop tool and set Apply to FX to Yes. This will apply the mask to the FX so you can control where the FX is applied.

June 2, 2015 at 3:48 amSorry I didn’t see this before I posted. You are correct Graham. Vegas Pro 13.0 allows you to apply a Mask to the FX. Very cool!

June 2, 2015 at 10:41 ama bit confusing, spell it out for me step by step please
also can I copy the all keyframes from the movements of the phoenix bird and the ice bird to make the lit area area follow the keyframe movements of the gifs of the birds?
someone will be riding the phoenix and someone will be riding the Ice bird so they are the only two that needs lighting (like how the YouTube video I linked to work)

The problem is that I was working from my email and I always work backward to reply to emails as they arrived so I replied to the post asking me a question without even seeing that you and Bob had already replied. Then I got to Bob’s and replied and then I realized that you had already answered way before I even opened my email. (oops). I guess I should read my email starting with the latest one so that I don’t answer questions that have already been answered by others. 🙁
