  • I”m doing some research. I have a 2013 retina MBP. Im gathering a Apple RAID card won’t work for me. Am I right on this?

It seems like if I am going to convert my Thunderbay to RAID 5 I’ll need to go the software route. Most of the editing I do is doc stuff that isn’t too graphics or effects intensive. It leaves me optimistic it wont compromise performance too much.

  • Because….unless I have this wrong….everything will go much quicker if I export first to Pro Res

  • Isn’t a SoftRAID going to be faster than FW800? I’ll be working with lots of data so I figured I might as well do this now before I get too deep into the project. Do you know any good articles comparing their speed?

  • SoftRAID will offer the software at a discount. Given the price of hardware RAID’s, I think I’m going to go for that option.

  • If I decide to maybe sell the OWC Thunderbay 4 and buy a hardware RAID 5, any recs?

I usually color correct each clip, getting darks down to 0 and peaks at 100. But I figure if I’m making something with lots of clips….it’s possible I’ll miss something. I’d use it for that. For that purpose though, I’d just apply it as a last step before exporting. Does that seem sensical? Thanks for the help today David.

  • The bottom line then is if i want to turn my OWC Thunderbay 4 (which I already own) into a RAID 5 I need to get SoftRAID?

Does it make sense to simply use broadcast safe at the end of every project, simply blanket applying it to the whole project in case you missed a stray excessive element?

  • And that’s really the only software to do a RAID 5? Is it the kind of thing you need once or do you need to run that software every time you use the RAID?

  • Wow. This thread was super amazing. I’d done research on RAID….but didn’t know about RAID 5. I was only thinking of RAID 0.

    Two questions:

1 – Any useful things to know about setting up a RAID? I know I go through Disc Utility. Any random tips for a newbie on RAIDs?

2 – I already have logged lots of footage. I don’t want to lose that work. I figure I’ll save my FCP X library. I didn’t import media to the library, as I reference external clips. If I log and transfer the exact same clips with the exact same name, will I have any problem with what I’ve logged already? Is there any chance the keywords and markers I’ve laid won’t refer to the same frames? I don’t imagine so…..but I wanna make sure.

Thanks as always guys. I know I’ve been asking a lot of questions lately. I’m finally starting to get past the beginner stage of FCP X, and it’s in no small part due to this forum.
