No. You can export final timelines from FCP Express and then import as media clips into X. But there is zero project compatibility between the two.

Actually it’s a bit limiting to think of Moore’s Law purely in terms of CPU development. It ignores the function of optimized software as well as co-processors, GPUs etc. I’d argue that computers will continue down this path of speed indefinitely as a matter of pure speed/functionality, not necessarily due to a specific component’s capabilities.

Yeah the sample rate doesn’t affect pitch/speed at all, merely quality. I’d guess the drift is more due to neither audio recorder having SMPTE timecode. So while I’d first try what Jeff suggests and re-export at 48Khz I’d guess that won’t change the offset. Instead do what he also suggests and blade the audio and manually resync.
For that long a take, losing sync with non SMPTE-timecode gear is fairly normal.

Yeah I have a good editor friend who started from scratch so to speak working for many years first as an editorial intern, later as an assistant and finally a pretty well respected and paid union Avid network TV editor in L.A..
Along the whole way, she worked her tail off night and day, was super talented and super dedicated. And it took her probably 10 years to get to a place of making a comfortable living at editing.
So yeah I would focus less on learning which keys do what in which app and more on the storytelling skills. Have them shoot stuff and put it together so they understand what’s involved. Have them learn to be great assistant editors because that’s the entry point for the profession.
And also be realistic that if they don’t absolutely love editing to the core of their souls they shouldn’t waste their time going to Hollywood/NYC. Because there are just too many others who live sleep and breathe it competing for the same jobs.
That said, there’s plenty of lower profile gigs in the corporate/local broadcast/media departments etc. Where you can make a decent living without killing yourself carrying someone’s coffee for 5 years just to get your foot in the door. Also a lot of us on this very forum make a living as shooter/editor services for hire- be it event videography, commercials, etc.
So it really depends what a student wants to do. I’d start out with storytelling skills. Learning Avid/Premiere/FCPX are certainly fine but you can go through the basics of any of them in a week. The rest is luck, perseverance and talent.

I wouldn’t do this directly in either if it were really a lot of footage and quality is critical. Much better plugins exist that do this as good as it can be realistically done.

That wouldn’t make much sense as each clip has different requirements. To be honest- I find Balance Color rarely useful because instead of making changes you can further adjust in the Color Board, it just does a best guess that you have no way to finely control.
The short answer is- no. You can just select multiple clips and Balance Color, and each shot will be balanced according to its needs. But there’s no way to use that tool to make all shots consistent/balance relative to each other.
It’s much better to learn the Color Board tools and work with the waveforms. Balance Color is a very basic, automated tool when you have no time/don’t know how the better tools work.
