At 3 feet the camera’s built-in lens would provide a more than adequate telephoto effect.

Video rate- 8mbps or lower, audio 192Kbps Ac3 Stereo. I have good luck with HP, Sony and TDK media.

That’s best done in a 3d app or via live action or probably a fairly cheesy and flat looking sort of thing in Motion.

Yep- many will indeed take a hard drive. Or DVD-DL media. Either cheaper and much easier than DLT- but no Macrovision if that matters.

No BetaSP can go directly from an HDV camera because it’s not an NTSC Standard definition signal. I’m sure you’re buddy could record the standard DV signal from the Sony cam just as he could from the HVX going via RCA or S-Video outputs. As for the quality being better than a Sony DSR250- kind of a subjective question. With the HVX you would would get 24p, not to mention increased color fidelity over the DVCAM camera, but the Sony does have access to potentially better lenses- so depends on your definition of what’s better.

Or if you want to bring them in as QuickTime- I’d recommend using the lossless preset. And don’t forget to look at them in FCP on an NTSC monitor- the desktop preview is a lower resolution proxy.

Because the load on the RAM buffer of the DVD player loads progressively and data rates are not perfectly contant- they vary. It’s like a glass of water with a small hole at the bottom. As long as you don’t fill it too fast it will keep draining and not overflow. But if you’ve been filling it for a while and you suddenly pour faster for a moment it will spill.
