PS- it’s a bit of an urban internet legend that by shooting letterbox you somehow trick a camera’s compression into giving more data bandwidth to the non-letterboxed portion of the image. The difference is neglible at best.

If your goal was to create a film print- the letterbox mode is essentially throwing away a good part of the frame that would have been useful to you. That said, you can still make a totally usable film print. That also said, it’s really not needed as most film festivals today are happy to project on video. That said even more, a film print is only required for a major wide theatrical release which with all respect sounds like that is not in the scope or intention of this project.

So you are one step backward but probably several steps forward. At this point I’d recommend making sure the film is the absolute tightest edit and best it can look on video. And then research which festivals might accept the kind of movie you made.

Well P2 is a storage format so it would not be something you’d transmit. But there’s nothing to say a Wireless Firewire transmitter and received couldn’t be created for the HVX. It would actually solve a ton of problems- the obvious one being a freedom of movement without tethering. Might not be that far off either- this USB-2 unit does exactly that:

24pA has one interlaced frame every five frames. 24pN has more.

Scale it down outside of Motion. Unless your output is 16000×10000 you are not gaining anything by starting with so many extra pixels.

You will be able to use it power-wise- the charger is 110/240. You may need a plug adaptor for the U.S. outlets. Gear-wise you’ll be able to feed it into FCP via Firewire. You would need a TV monitor capable of showing PAL in order to view the footage. Otherwise you’ll only be able to watch on the desktop.

The slight gain in resolution from PAL imho is completed negated by the incompatibility of PAL with NTSC equipment though. If you want folks in the U.S. to watch your footage you’ll have to downconvert, which will yield an end NTSC product with noticably lower quality than something shot on an NTSC DVX. So unless you plan to exhibit on PAL in a PAL country I wouldn’t bother.

There is a service reset you can find if you google but this is not recommended for use. You could void your warranty.
