Hi, guys, first great site. I am new here. I would like to ask you the following question: If I buy a PAL panasonic dvx100 model which I heard yields over 550 lines of resolution will I be able to use it here in the USA. By that I mean can I recharge the battery and so on. I think that final cut pro accepts Pal right? Or will I need PAL equipment to edit and so on?

You will be able to use it power-wise- the charger is 110/240. You may need a plug adaptor for the U.S. outlets. Gear-wise you’ll be able to feed it into FCP via Firewire. You would need a TV monitor capable of showing PAL in order to view the footage. Otherwise you’ll only be able to watch on the desktop.

The slight gain in resolution from PAL imho is completed negated by the incompatibility of PAL with NTSC equipment though. If you want folks in the U.S. to watch your footage you’ll have to downconvert, which will yield an end NTSC product with noticably lower quality than something shot on an NTSC DVX. So unless you plan to exhibit on PAL in a PAL country I wouldn’t bother.

    K. Noah, thanks. I guess the only reason for using Pal is if you are sure you will be transferring to film. AS I am sure you know the film “Full frontal” was shoot with a Canon Pal Camera. Also the film “bamboozled” was shot with a Sony Pal Camera.

Actually that is not even true anymore. Remember that Full Frontal was shot with an interlace camera, the XL-1. Murderball which was just nominated for an Academy award was shot with a DVX100/A NTSC model. November which had a release in theaters last summer was shot on an NTSC DVX100. Mad Hot Ballroom which also had a theatrical release was shot on an NTSC DVX100A. Best Cinematography out of Sundance this year Irag in Fragments was shot on an NTSC DVX100A. So just for Film release is not the same consideration it used to be for PAL. Excellent quality can be had with a Progressive, 24P camera like the NTSC DVX.

    Best,
