Get a second opinion- i.e go to another replicator. Some are much better than others in properly outputting DVD from DVD-r.

are you maintaining the proper frame rate? Motion seems to be fussy with audio- better to do that in another app like FCP or Soundtrack Pro.

Umm broadcast no. If you want it to look good you need to have the film properly telecined at a post house. It’s not really that expensive these days, 100/hour or less if you beg. Surely if you can afford to have a DVX you can afford a couple of hundred.

depends- if you shoot 60i with the DVX you could probably get them looking pretty close. If you shot 24p, and if you’re like me you’ll fall in love with the look very quickly- the GL2 will not be worthwhile any more to cut in IMHO. Lots more info here:

The specs I mentioned above would be required. Not sure where you read that as with stock gear. No g5 would do 10 streams of H264 anyway as it’s hugely computationally complex.

Hate to say but perhaps it’s possible you were not actually recording when you thought you were and you then fast forwarded. If there’s no timecode and no image in multiple decks that would be a real possibility. My last suggestion would be take the tape to a dub house and see if they can recover anything on a high end deck.

Probably your data rate is too high either for the hard drive or your video card. To play back that sort of material properly you need a raid and a high end graphics card or better something like a Blackmagic or Kona card. I’d suggest bumping down the H264 data rate quite a bit.

Sure- you can tweak color temp in most prosumer cams. Balancing cards just give you a quick, consistent way to balance.

Did you run a head cleaner and also try it on another camera or deck? The DV tape uses an incredibly tiny track pitch and can lose the signal easily with dirty or misaligned heads. But there’s a lot of error correction too, so you may be able to salvage it without resorting to a data recovery company which again would probably not specialize in DV.
