It’s actually pretty logical if you think about it. The U.S. is it’s own market and all it has is NTSC. In Europe there’s many different countries and while most of them are PAL there’s a smattering of NTSC countries out there. Enough of a market to make multisystem DVD players a good marketing idea.

Gotta agree with Gary- this is definitely workable but may be a bit risky to your footage. I would suggest instead either renting two more P2 cards or buying enough so that you have 2 or 3 8GB cards. Then get the P2 store. It’s solid, offers push button simple operation you can do as a one-man band as need be and you could go all day with one.
I think it’s an important consideration when budgeting for this camera to look beyond just the body. If you’re doing long form shooting especially, you’ve got a substantial budget above and beyond the camera to consider.

Are you trying to use the deck as a playthrough device in Firewire? It should work, just connect and then go into the camera’s MCR mode. You’ll then have it as an External playback device in FCP. From there you just press the dub button on the HVX and you should see your timeline displayed with pulldown.

I’m obviously biased but I do think it’s telling that at NAB 2005 there was one HVX under glass and at NAB 2006 there were a couple of dozen HVX’es all around the booth while most other Panasonic camera shown were the only one of their kind. Clearly this is the main camera in Panasonic’s arsenal right now.

Visually they are identical. 24pA is optimized for a 23.98 edit or filmout, 24p is meant for editing at 29.97- so since you want to end on BetaSP- shoot 24p standard.

Just record and mix well- the theater sets the level.

It’s kinda common sense- better CCD, better optics, etc. Very low light performace is not something I consider part of better or worse. These are not handy cams- you need to carry your own lighting if you want the best imagery.

As of now- you can’t- only FCP built in from zero timecode using Capture Now from Uncontrollable device. Doesn’t really matter a whole lot though as there’s no “master” to correlate to.

It does- unless you did not shoot 24pA or 24pn.

The batteries used by the DVX are memory free and do not benefit from discharging for storage.
