Comparing HVX DV tape footage to DVX footage
I’ve already shot most of a corporate job on a DVX100A 24p/60i/4:3 . Now I have an opportunity to finish the job
shooting w/HVX onto DV tape 24p/60i/4:3 . No P2 cards, no downconverting to SD.
Will HVX DV tape footage quality compare well w/DVX footage? Subjects are usually well-lit talking heads. I expect HVX may require a stop more light, but anything else?chris li/wash dc DP

Why not just finish on the DVX for consistency? The HVX in 480i will cut fine but it’s kinda overkill.

That wouldn’t be any fun. Of course I could get another DVX , but I want to see if HVX is truly backward compatable with DVX. It would help to have one camera that could shoot mini-dv tape as well as P2.chris li/DP

No perfect match necessary, just wondering if mini-DV quality of HVX is as good as that of DVX. OTW, I will continue

The HVX is better actually but again overkill for DV.

My understanding is that the lens is “much” better (haven’t tested it myself), so the result should be better.

How is it that the HVX shooting DV tape is better than the DVX? DVX is more light sensitive, right? Just curious, can you quantify what’s better when using the HVX?

It’s kinda common sense- better CCD, better optics, etc. Very low light performace is not something I consider part of better or worse. These are not handy cams- you need to carry your own lighting if you want the best imagery.

So has anyone had any personal experience shooting HVX mini-dv/60i/24p/4:3 ? I’ve used the HVX for 1080i jobs w/P2 but no sd minidv shoots. I still get many calls for DVX jobs and I would like to use just one camera . It’s not a matter of overkill but having the flexibility to weather the transition from sd to hd.

I agree. The HVX can do both, so if you have it, no sense in letting the tape drive go to waste. I’m shooting some stuff right now in both DV-24p480i SD and 720p24pn HD, and will make a comparison in a week or so when I get back to the studio.
