This can be due to a variety of factors- for example you may have multiple angles with their audio active in the Angle Editor whereas your final timeline only has a single audio angle active at a time. More info needed.

FCPX will only report “Missing Proxy” if you’ve chosen Proxy mode in the Viewer:
If you toggle back to Optimized/Original, this warning will go away. That said— you’ll get far better performance via optimized or proxy media from H.264 original media.

What format is the original media? And when you say you *need* to create proxies do you mean they are being created automatically or you cannot edit because FCPX reports missing proxy media?

I usually just buy cheap drives. 1 TB is dirt cheap these days.
