This is where you have to go pay someone like Drivesavers for professional level data recovery I’m afraid. Prosumer recovery apps will find pieces and try to put them back together but unfortunately in the case of video they rarely do so correctly. Typically runs $1K-2K. This is where you decide which is more expensive/less painful: data recovery or reshoot.

Favorites are precisely what you want to divvy up long clips into potentially useful ranges. Roles are much better suited to identifying specific types of media say if you want to steer sound from a certain camera or device to a track at the final export. Or identify clips from a certain source that may need to be redacted or highlighted later. Tons of uses for Roles but identifying portions within a clip is not one of them- favoriting and rejecting does that.

I would suggest switching to proxy mode and see if that makes a difference. The system specs are not ideal for that codec with that many streams.

I think it’s a great tool if you’re doing major VFX work and certainly at the entry level price of free, there’s no reason not to at least give it a try.

Oh yeah the current behavior is definitely more consistent from an engineering/OS perspective. I just think that if I’m searching for media— and I always am when looking into the browser— I’m always looking for media that seeing all my media is much more useful than seeing none.
With one scenario I have a decent chance of spotting what I’m after or at least redoing my search to catch the right parameter. With the other, I’m confirming only that my search parameters don’t match a single clip. Which is interesting but not very useful to speeding my editorial workflow. But this is just my opinion…
