  • No. They don’t exist in a timeline. I was making one after another outside of a sequence and then crashed. I just don’t have the clips since the bin wasn’t saved when I crashed.

It’s so annoying, I can see the media sitting there. Would using Media Tool be any different than dragging the mdb file into a bin?

ETA: Got a tiny bit farther using Media Tool, I got the renders and source to show but still couldn’t find a way to get the actual clips back. I’ve set this aside for future noodling. A side project. That must be conquered.

  • Interesting.

I did end up making Pro-Res DNx QTs and so I used Source File/Name and the clip info in the Avid is good. The burn-in has the frames but that doesn’t matter. I also included the Reel and folder name that it lives in in the burn-in so if it doesn’t link they will know exactly where to navigate to find the clip.

I’ll try what you mentioned and also what Glenn mentioned above for mxf media.

And yes, I’ve wondered about the Reel column in Avid. When I’ve gotten dailies prepped by someone else sometimes it’s empty, sometimes it has had the clip names in it but if a facility makes the dailies rather than the DIT I see that they use a Dailies Roll name for the Reel which makes sense. So I’ve put the folder from the shoot day in as that info.

    Thanks for the input!

  • Hm… I’ll play around with that for next time. Thanks!

  • Thanks Glenn. I’ll give that a try.

EDIT: Decided to move forward with Pro-Res proxies rather than mxf. And figured out how to work the folder thing.

Any idea how to just get the clip name alone for the Tape field?

And new question… How do I not have the files go 6 folders deep? There’s an option I saw that I left unchecked, but even though I navigate to the folder I want to use, it creates a bunch of extra folders that iirc is the original media path name.

  • Saw that you were editing your post while I was replying.

I usually don’t need to rebuild any older databases as I keep an eye on how many items are in the folders and keep them way below what Avid thinks is fine. I limit mine to around 1200 and manually start a new folder when necessary. But for dailies, once they are in the folder is done.

Nope. I don’t edit with AMA footage.

I swear I’m using folders with letters/words in them right now inside my MXF folder and all my media is online. Been doing this for years.

Here’s my folder structure I’m using right now and one from years ago. Now, the databases won’t rebuild unless I change it to “1” if that’s what you’re thinking, but Avid does read them and see the media in them.

  • I’ve had letters in my folder names for years. Is there a version where this stopped working? I’m on 8.3.1 and have named my folders “DAY01” etc. for the picture dailies and “SND_DAY01” for the sound (they didn’t number the sound rolls). And I believe I was on 8.4.x on my last bigger job and folders were named with all sorts of words in them.

Even on much older versions (mc 4.x) we would add an x or something to get Avid to not have that folder as the current folder to write to. I just upgraded my system from 5.5.5 where I did it as well.

  • Any reason why you don’t just name your folders “DAY01” etc.? That’s what I do for dailies. And if I have more than one project I’ve prefaced it with a three letter project code.

I like your method of keeping separate Avid Media Files folders though. I think I’ll incorporate that since that keeps the current “1” folder from having those extra things like titles and renders mixed together.

Is there anywhere to enable the mask exporting in 8.3.1? I can enable the mask but I don’t have that export option. Seeing as you have the “legal range” option for the color space I assume you’re on a later version.

If not, I can just make a mask but it seems there should be that option somewhere.

Interestingly, I just found in “Full Screen Playback” setting an option to enable the Target Mask for that but it doesn’t affect exports. I’m glad to have found that though since I have burn-ins on the bottom of the screen in the matte that I want covered up when I play the cut in full screen for the director.

    That’s good to know. 🙂

You should have the wav file names in the TapeID column. If each mic has a unique name for each take that indicate which mic it is then you probably don’t have to worry about the TRKx column info. Or even a unique Sound Roll, which it maybe should have since it seems they were all recorded separately. Why is that they aren’t all in one wav file with multiple tracks?

I didn’t go to the link in Michael’s post but if he has a way for you to get everything in order before import that’s probably your best bet to be safe.
