April 25, 2010 at 3:15 pm in reply to: ALEXA vs. RED?

    WOW:

This thread just says to me i need to think long and hard.

On hearing and seeing the Alexa i was really intrigued. I do mostly work for Television. Ads, Music videos, broadcast design, stuff like that. I’ve been using a RED ONE for about a year and a half now and i love it to death, it has helped raise the bar with my work in so many ways it has been unimaginable. I can do things my P2 & Letus could never do.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR6WxzS6Zmc (our first RED shoot)

NOW with the Alexa going directly to prores and the Alexa having a 3.5K sensor (which is plenty res if you ask me)and 13 efin stops or DR, it puts me in a kind of tail spin.
AND because of the RED i’ve been in negotiations to do 2 full length features. The ArriRAW option can be adopted (on an as needed basis)for the features.

My only thing is the price tag of 50K euro, which i do think is a great price but for us in the Caribbean a bit of a stretch.

No i don’t own a RED we rent it but its part of our mainstay these days. But i need to make a decision so that we can keep more money in house rather than spending it on rentals

Tough choice. Need some advice and thoughts

And i know there are 2 other versions of the Alexa due out, what are the features of those, sensor wise etc etc.?

    Yup :
My 70-210 lens is at f4, it works great with my extreme but the first time i took it to the beach i got some GG in the images, think i set it up badly, never had a problem after that. That was strange cuz i’ve shot outdoors with it b4 in daylight and never had that problem. Yea that lens may very well be too slow. So where can i find a fast 200-400mm lens that wont cost me a zillion dollars that will work with our adapter ? LOL
I prefer nikon lenses but im even looking at canon to see what i can find

Anyways , do those ED lenses work at all on letus, well the ones with the stop control anyway?

BOB you are so nuts !!! LOL

    wow i want a 28K

Torstein, u cannot edit in FCP in 4K just yet, you are stuck with 2K for now.

RED Cine X & Redrocket combo, will help now if u wanna use that for grading and as the guys said Scratch, i have no idea if Color can use red rocket or even will in the future.

Dude use what u have now and as the tech becomes available u can snap them up to move forward.

The rumor mill gets the guys here pissed, LOL, u have a top of the line system use that for now u will upgrade in the future

    Very true very true:

Hva enot gotten my hands on one of those lovely 300s’ yet as they shit next month. Nor have i put my hands on a D90. Have a friend with one so im gonna run a lil test. BUT, i’ll have to wait for the 300 it see what IT can do as well. experimenting with the new DSLR stuff is getting to be lots of fun. When the Ki Pro gets variable frame rate recording im so gettin one.

Well so far they (AJA) have not said anything but im sure with a firmware update it could possibly happen. But they’re will be throughput issue with recording media.
eg. im sure PRORES LT wont be able to be recorded to sxs type cards as they only provide 100MB per sec and LT is 120MB
but these are minor caveats the user will have to be aware of.

BUT who am i to talk, i dont work at AJA.

I think we will see other versions of the Ki Pro at some point as well, just like the IO line
