Dumb question, but are you using the USB cable that shipped with the camera? I have a Sony DSLR with a USB port which for all intents and purposes should work with any USB cable, but it will not.

That USB cable will work for other non-Sony devices, but it is the only one that will allow me to connect my camera to my PC. Strange but true.

There are more things at play that sheer processing power. The choice of motherboard by the manufacturer, memory speed, disk RPM, bus speeds etc, your laptop configuration and other installed software will impact performance.

The most obvious performance hits on a laptop are:
    – slower hard drives. Typically laptops are shipped with 5400 rpm drives. Not much you can do, apart from replacing your hard drive with a solid state drive
    – inadequate RAM. Most laptops ship with a bare minimum required to run the operating system. The first thing I do is max out the memory to what the motherboard AND installed operating system can support.
    – slow RAM. Many laptops ship with DDR2 RAM which is slow compared to RAM in desktops. DDR2 only runs at 800 Mhz, whilst most PC’s have RAM that runs at 1333, 1600 or higher.
    – antivirus software. Disable it during renders. Don’t forget to re-enable it when you are done
    – power plan on your laptop , accessible via Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options. A laptop running off a battery power source will use CPU more conservatively than when running on mains power.

Glad to be of assistance. Vegas is a great product. The preview lag issue started in version 9 when Vegas stopped bundling Cineform. You can still get Cineform from Neoscene, and if lag is a real issue, consider getting it. I get by on my lowly i7-970 processor (only just :-)), but most of the time I can edit in Preview Full. I only revert to Preview Draft if I apply massive amounts of FX and color correction.

Curious. I have had no such jitter issues with the credit roll in Vegas, and yes, you can cut and paste from Word. I did it for about 200 names. Perhaps it has something to do with the selection of font. I kept it simple (Arial). It will not differentiate headings though e.g.

    Camera Man

    Joe Bloggs

It treats them as one type of credit roll heading, but it is simple enough to go back in and change it.

  • You can start Vegas more than once on the same PC, and in effect have 2 or 3 instances running, allowing you to swap between them.

  • The Vasst Ultimate S Pro 4.x Quadcam plug-in will allow you to work as you suggested. I use it in exactly the way you describe. I work on the events at track level and apply FX and do what ever pan and crop is needed.

I believe the built-in multi-cam plugin that ships with Vegas is a bit limited, and I have not used it more than once, after which I got too frustrated with its limitations.

The Quadcam within Ultimate S is a bit quirky at first to use (perhaps because I did not fully RTFM), especially after you have processed the cameras to create the Master track and notice the lower tracks bleed through with the MC-Tally and MC-Overlay. I simply mute the lower video tracks once I have created the Master. Titles need to be on the top most track.

Download a free trial of Ultimate S. Some of this will make sense once you use the plugin. If you do lots of multi-cam work, this plugin is a must. If you need to use more than 4 cameras, you should look into Infiniticam. Once again, the user interface has a few quirks, but you should be able to figure them out.

I have used both and would highly recommend you check out Ultimate S Pro 4.x. I use Ultimate S almost in every project I do.

The extra cores come in very handy when performing multiple renders simultaneously. I had 2 x 2 hour two pass VBR projects to render. Both had track and event FX and one even had NeatVideo denoiser FX. I was quite expecting it to take all night. Took no longer to render two projects than it did for one. It was the first time I really heard my i7 processor getting worked hard with the fan running flat out!

DVDA on occasion does not properly write to blu-ray and I have put it down to my choice of media. My burner accepts BD-R and BD-RE discs, of which I have had zero success in getting a proper/full burn when it comes to BD-R. I at times only got the menu, or on another occasion, it only burnt about 30 minutes of playable video. I use Shintaro BD-RE discs (which are also inkjet printable) and have had a 100% burn success rate.

Try changing your blu-ray media, but make sure your burner can handle it.
