I’m hoping someone has run across this before and can offer a suggestion.
A department in the college I work at recently bought a Sony HXR-NX70 camcorder.
We had it successfully hooked up in our main edit suite last week (Pro 10, XP Pro, SP3).
They brought it down this week to get some footage off of it to edit and I could not the computer to see the camera at all.
I took it into another edit suite (Pro 8, XP Pro, SP2), hooked it up and it worked as expected.
I’ve been hooking up USB-based camcorders all week so I know it’s not a connection issue.
When I look at “My Computer”, the camera is listed as another drive yet the computer refuses to let me open it up.
Any and all ideas greatly appreciated.

Im wondering Mike if its a Windows 7 compatible issue
    with that camera…Because from what
you wrote it works well on Windows XP systems and i
presume well enough its Windows 7 you have and not getting
anything out of it on your system.

Steve, both machines are running XP Pro, one with SP3 (Pro 10) and one with SP2 (Pro 8).

As I replied on the other forum – the card needs to be reformatted. Try putting the card into a reader to get the files then reformat the card in the camera.

If you have another memory card, plug it into the camera. If I am right, Windows will let you see the files over the USB port.

Steve, I wish it was a card but this camera has 100 GB. of internal memory and that’s where the information is.

    Mike

Dumb question, but are you using the USB cable that shipped with the camera? I have a Sony DSLR with a USB port which for all intents and purposes should work with any USB cable, but it will not.

That USB cable will work for other non-Sony devices, but it is the only one that will allow me to connect my camera to my PC. Strange but true.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Nigel, yes I am using the cable that came with it.
If the guy had bought some SD cards like I recommended, this wouldn’t be an issue 🙂

Hey Mike, I’d like to offer a possible solution. I had this exact thing happen to me when I bought my new HD Camcorder. I plugged into the front USB port, and no communication. I resolved my issue by plugging into my rear USB port. Odd, I know…….but I read about it on the net, and Voila it worked for me! Strange things is, other devices work fine with my front USB port, such as thumb drives etc., but not my Camcorder. Hope this works for you too?

Rob, thanks for the suggestion but I’ve already tried all the front and rear ports 🙁

Mike, when you see the camera as another drive is that in the explorer window or disk management?
If in the latter only, could there be a conflict of drive letter naming?
