Credit Roll Limitations???
Posted by Ken Bennett on October 5, 2011 at 4:06 pmIt appears I can only create a credit roll that will playback at a maximum length of 40 seconds. If I continue adding lines of credits it will speed up the credit roll playback. My credit roll should run about 3 minutes for normal readability. Is Vegas not able to do longer than 40 seconds of credits?
Thanks,
Ken Bennett

October 5, 2011 at 6:44 pmKen,
I’m at work (where I don’t have Vegas Pro), but yes, you can make it run whatever length you need. I believe you can drag the right edge of the event on the timeline to extend its time or from within the credit roll screen at the top should be a Duration window (that probably shows and defaults to “00:00:40.00“. If you change the value here to “00:03:30.00“, the credit roll event would run for 3 minutes, 30 seconds.

October 5, 2011 at 7:39 pmDon’t use the credit roll. It will jitter every time after you render it. That’s been my experience. I think you’ll find other posts on here about the credit roll too.
I just use the text tool to make the credits. Then I zoom out and then pan it bottom to top. -

October 5, 2011 at 10:15 pmAs Roger said, don’t waste your time with the credit roll.
Take a look at my response in the Scrolling text jagged thread (FYI, this was a response to Roger).Another way to do the same thing is to place a text media on the timeline. set it to the length you want, set the text size to 20 (this is just a starting point so feel free to adjust it later as needed).
Copy and paste all your text into the one screen.
Switch to the Placement tab.
Adjust the Y value to a positive value high enough that the text just disappears off the bottom of the screen.
This will automatically create a keyframe at the beginning.
At the bottom of this timeline, hit the Last Keyframe button and change the Y value to a negative number.
i.e. if the beginning was +4, the end is -4.
Adjust your font colours, drop shadow, etc. as desired.
Close the window and play it.
That’s all there is to it. -

October 5, 2011 at 11:40 pmThanks to all. But it seems you say there are issues with the Credit Roll. Don’t use it at all because the scrolling text will jitter. I see that in my rendered test. This is unacceptable for professional video production of course. So the Vegas Credit Roll is a joke.
Using the basic Text Media seems to offer better playback. But text entry allows for only one column. My credit roll has 2 columns. Can I drop in copy list from Excel or even Word? Or do I have to do every manually? If that’s the case, Vegas has no professional credit roll options, unless you want to spend hours tweaking your text entries.
What other solution are you using for profession credit rolls? Keep in mind these are just plan white text over black or transparent backgrounds.

A lot of us have been begging Sony for a good titler for a very long time.
They finally gave us ProType Titler which, IMO, is still a joke 🙁“Can I drop in copy list from Excel or even Word?”
I’ve never tried it so please go ahead and let us know how it works out.
“What other solution are you using for profession credit rolls”
Create it in Photoshop, save it in PNG (or whatever else you want) format, bring it into Vegas and use Pan/Crop to do the “roll”.

October 6, 2011 at 1:44 amSounds like a simple solution, Mike. Thanks.
Another question for Vegas is, why is this Credit Roll and Text Media “edit” windows so small. I’ve got 26″ monitor and get this tiny text interface.

October 6, 2011 at 7:32 amCurious. I have had no such jitter issues with the credit roll in Vegas, and yes, you can cut and paste from Word. I did it for about 200 names. Perhaps it has something to do with the selection of font. I kept it simple (Arial). It will not differentiate headings though e.g.
Camera Man
Joe Bloggs
It treats them as one type of credit roll heading, but it is simple enough to go back in and change it.
My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

October 6, 2011 at 8:52 amHey Ken, you might want to try Bluff Titler…been using it for years. I think you can still download the basic version to try out free, Pete.

Not sure what you mean Ken as I can drag mine out as big as I want to.

I’ve never had a “jitter” problem using the Credit Roll, but it’s limitations make using it less than ideal. I do a lot of theater and stage videos and need to be able to make quick changes to the names and roles.
I’ve found a better tool (Videotagger Premium) that does import the names and roles from MS Excel. It’s not free, but at $30 it does make credit rolls easier.
Here’s an example:
