I work at a small public access TV station. We historically used FCP (except for trimming and titling meeting coverage on Canopus capture boxes (ugh)). With the transition from tapes to AVCHD cameras for meeting coverage we adopted Premiere Pro CS5 for quick turn around to air without need of an intermediary codec. Users were still trained on FCP7. While legacy members still use FCP7 and we still use Premiere for our meeting turnaround, I’m moving forward with training new members on FCPX and the response has been immensely positive.

For the needs/experience of our users, FCPX is great and while one could point at this and say, “See, not pro!”, I see another slice of the overall market making meaningful (and artful) content and with tools that are aiding and improving that process.

For myself, I’ve moved over to FCPX for personal and work-related projects and am mostly pleased. Like anyone else, I have my list of issues, but I can work with it where it’s at and look forward to its growth in a non-distant future.

Sure thing. I actually looked it up just the other day because I’d hit on the same problem.

Hover your cursor over the point in the connected clip that you want the connection to be moved to (may be handy to park the playhead there with snapping on), hold down cmnd-option and click.

  • Compressor 4 is not particularly different from Compressor 3.5. Did you feel the same way about earlier versions of Compressor? What encoding program do you generally use/prefer?

  • The settings window in Compressor has a search bar. Does entering “h.264” bring up a setting that would make a good starting point for you? Also, with that search bar empty, click on the button to its immediate right (“+” with a dropdown). There are a variety of other presets available there.

You should also be able import Compressor 3.5 custom presets into 4. I have not tried the method in this link, but maybe it will be helpful: Moving Compressor 3.5 Custom Presets to Compressor 4

I was on a panel last year for Public Access on essentially this topic. When I mentioned Gaffers tape people laughed–it’s obvious, but it isn’t. A plastic credit card style card with black tape wrapped around a few times (the long way) can fit in your back pocket or wallet and is super handy when you’ve left that roll “way over there.” Also, a Sharpie with 1″ white tape wrapped around it–perfect for quick equipment labels.

Move your existing FCPX app (in the App folder) to the trash and then try the download again. To be safe, don’t empty the trash yet, but it should work fine.

Thanks, Chris, for the advice. unfortunately at this moment I don’t think that’s the fix.

Her project is fairly intensive and essentially done and this has only manifested itself since yesterday with it being due this afternoon. I’m trying to figure out if there’s a specific something that has been changed that I can fix for her semi-globally so can she can just print it off.

The deck is definitely in DV mode (I have switched out and back to cnfirm). And, yes, basically I am getting no signal from the computer.

    I am still stumped.
