I would encourage you to encode the piece in 16×9 eliminating the letter boxing. Also I would suggest de-interlacing the reel if you intend it to be viewed on the web. The interlace artifact can be quite distracting. I appreciate your vulnerability in providing your reel for critique.

For a run that long you will experience quite a bit of quality loss unless you use really nice cables. I would recommend a balun from Intellix. They are about 45-55 US dollars per piece ( 2 needed, one to send one to recieve). The baluns convert video for transmission via Cat 5. I have used runs over 300 feet with no loss of quality (and HD video !!) Check out their site…

Awesome. I did not even consider the low light performance improvement. I currently have the F set to 2.4 with no gain ( and that is with full stage lighting !). So increased light sensitivity would be awesome !

I have found that the type (brand) of media you use is very important. I burn Red Laser HD-DVD discs weekly with DVDSP and have had no problems, even with AC3 audio, until last week that is. I had run out of the Maxell brand DVD-R (they sell them at costco in bulk) and had to resort to using no brand DVD-R media from compusa. The audio would not play in sync after 30 seconds. The video would stutter and audio would be completely out of sync. I encoded and muxed the files many times with no change. I could play the HD-DVD TS folder files from the hard drive with DVDSP but the Toshiba would not have it at all. I got some more Maxell media formated the blank disc with the same files that would not play on the generic media and popped the final product in the Toshiba A2. It played flawlessly. Check out Vortex Media’s How to shoot a great looking interview. It is 40 bucks and an hour long. It has great tips and is very strait forward. I believe dvcreators.net also has a lighting dvd called enlightenment. I have not seen it but have enjoyed other dvcreator.net material.

I second Bob’s idea. There are also other nice 24″ monitors out there. I use an LG and BenQ makes a nice one as well. The key is to make sure it has component video input so it can display the YUV color space and resolution from the Kona analog video output.

Miranda makes this box that will convert DVI to HD-SDI in the appropriate format for video. It costs about 4500 though.
