  • i wonder if Resolve can use file names to create Reel#s?
that would be useful for the GoPro material

im not that familiar with it, but it does a lot of things.
it’s the most Pro tool you can get for this considering it’s price,

the workflow I’ve used for GoPro is to create a master FIRST (with Reel#s), then create edit version from that,
    not do both at once.

if MPeg StreamClip is working for you, great,
but if you ask if it’s a problem to not have reel# and TC, i’ll say “yes” 🙂
especially on a big show, where you are handing files back & forth between different departments.

FWIW, FCP’s Media Manager can’t successfully trim media if it doesn’t have a proper TC track.

  • throwing away the reel# & TC from your camera originals is a very wrong thing to be doing.
what happens if you need to re-visit the camera originals? you’re totally stuck.

and just because FCP can re-concet to a bunch of clips with no complex edits in them doesn’t really prove much.

trust me dont follow a path that involves you discarding that important metadata.
especially when you can just as easily keep it.
heck use FCP if you must, it’ll do what you need.

  • “No TC and no Reel #? Are there issues I should be concerned with later in the workflow?”

    huge issues.
DO NOT PROCEED YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY!

some finishing apps can reconnect based on file name alone, but no Reel or TC is just asking for double.

Resolve was a grading app primarily , but is used more & more for other things, like Data wrangling,

did i mention a simple batch re-namer would quickly deal with any added suffixes?

  • i’m pretty sure you can get on top of the name suffix in Compressor, if you use droplets.
i think you can control if it has the suffix or not.

of course the Reel# & Timecode issues would be more of a show-stoper.

the name thing is quite do-able in Resolve.

  • Resolve can also do what you need.

it’s a different interface, but not to hard to learn
and it’s free if you are working with HD & under.

“the quicktime files that are created contain no video.”

could be thay are simply missing the .mov extension.
    i have seen this happen.

a batch re-name utility will be able to fix all the files at once.

“I need to get the film out to my colour corrector and to reconnect to our original RED footage. ”

so where does the media management come into this?
i think it will just make what you need to do harder.
reconnecting alll those smaller media managed files (with the weird names) will be harder to reconnect that single compete files

weirdly, this is next to impossible in FCP (classic, i don’t know about X)

but you can do it via XMLs, & 3rd party apps

the primary one i know of is from Spherico Film tools.
you export an XML from FCP,
run it thru the Filmtools app, and get an XML back that opens in FCP with text generators over your clips.

RESOLVE (which is free) can also do this.
so you could export an XML from FCP, open it in resolve, and after tweaking all the right settings,
be able to export a file with all the clip names burnt in.
i *think* you can engineer the export to make a bunch of separate clips, all with burn-ins.
i know Resolve is used for data wranglng and that is a a fairly common need in that world.

if this is something you want / need to do regularly,
you might be best of making burn-in versions of your archive clips, BEFORE you start editing
or make burn-in versions and re-connect to them which is a tricky operation, but not impossible.

May 5, 2014 at 3:22 am in reply to: 2:40 Aspect Ratio Matte FCP 7

no, there is no 2.40 setting in that mask filter
you need to generate your own mask in photoshop

in my part of the world (Austalia) these days 2.40 is the norm, not 2.39.
it’s an even number of pixels of the top and the bottom.

here is what a local post house advised me:
The final aspect ratio we deliver is 2.40:1 so in terms of HD it is 1920×800 (140 off top and bottom).
