Put file or clip names in the frame?
Hi,
I am working on a project that contains a lot of archive footage.
In order to optimise communication with the archivist I was wondering if it is possible to include the title of a clip or the filename in the picture of the shot.
Much like you would burn in a timecode of a roughcut.
With each cut the name of the clip or the file would be emedded in the picture.
Just wondering if there would be a plugin out there that maybe does this?

weirdly, this is next to impossible in FCP (classic, i don’t know about X)
but you can do it via XMLs, & 3rd party apps
the primary one i know of is from Spherico Film tools.
you export an XML from FCP,
run it thru the Filmtools app, and get an XML back that opens in FCP with text generators over your clips.RESOLVE (which is free) can also do this.
so you could export an XML from FCP, open it in resolve, and after tweaking all the right settings,
be able to export a file with all the clip names burnt in.
i *think* you can engineer the export to make a bunch of separate clips, all with burn-ins.
i know Resolve is used for data wranglng and that is a a fairly common need in that world.if this is something you want / need to do regularly,
you might be best of making burn-in versions of your archive clips, BEFORE you start editing
or make burn-in versions and re-connect to them which is a tricky operation, but not impossible.nick

What about using chapter markers? You can enter clip names in the comment box for each marker.
Export a rendered self-contained movie, check the option to include the markers.
Open the rendered movie in Quicktime Player and select “VIEW>SHOW CHAPTERS”.

CatDV will do exactly what you want. It only works with .mov and does it as a text track and not “burned in” so it will need QT player to see it.

I’ve once seen some one do it like this. Disconnected the media drive, so all footage goes offline. The Media Offline window then shows the clip names, export this and import it back into FCP. You can crop and resize this and superimpose it on to your timeline.
