is it FCP 7.0?
i have a very vague memory of Autosave issues in that version (BUT I COULD BE WRONG)

my only other thought is that there is some permissions issue,
and FCP cant write to that location.
You could try Repair Permission from Disk Utility

i think it could be trouble,
as each project may create different render files with the same name.

however, if you’re rigorous, and work in differently named projects it might be ok.
can you not render to the server?

well it wouldn’t be THAT much more, as the LT would be a small fraction of the 4k ProRes,
BUT you are right, there could be a better way, it depends on your original h264 footage,
and whether it has accessible TC.

in that case the H264 remains the master

then you could just create offline edit media,
do your cut, and then conform your hi-res version from the h264

what’s the source of the H264?
have you maintained the original card structure? that would be important for conforming the shots
are you working with a post house on this?

it’s easy to get FCP to create a sequence larger than what it will offer in the sequence settings, as you have discovered.
it might not play very well!

the best way forward is probably to create 4k pro-res masters from your h264 files,
then create lower-res versions for editing.
1280×720 ProRes LT is very economical.

but you should talk to whoever is doing the final mastering about this as well.

sounds a lot lik you’ve got interlaced footage,

FCP’s canvas and viewer show only 1 field at a time
Quicklime show both at once burt with a combed effect. looks bad.

THere’s a quick fix to be had in Quicktime PLayer (not X)
open the Movie Properties (Window menu or Command J)
select the Video Track
Choose the Visual Settings pane,
check either single field or de-interlace.

this is ok for quick viewings, but if you need to create a de-interlaced master, it’s not the way to go.

that should be working as a matter of course.
the XML should carry the filter settings.

maybe trash prefs on both systems and try again.

do you have to use XML?
can you not just move the project file?

in the end we went with both copies of the Audio Mastering suit, and gave one to our musicians.
it did seem to offer something unique, especially Spectral Layers.
so thanks for the feedback

now for my next question:
Spectral Layers looks a bit like Izotope’s RX,
and the reason i ask is that we have some distorted field recordings.
I see RX can do a certain amount of repair on clipped audio, can Spectral Layers?

maybe filters have been disabled in that new sequence’s settings (and in your user prefs)
