never seen that.
it may have been due to corrupt prefs,
or a corrupt sequence?

was your media Kosher?
not H264 or mp3?

fixes i can think of include:
– trash your prefs, and try again
– do another MM, this time creating offline clips (use the same handle duration)
you *might* be able to reconnect, but frankly i doubt it will be easy.

another thought:
run your original sequence through FCP Reconnect ($60 from Video Toolshed),
and reconnect to the new media.

hi Julie.

FCP can’t easily convect to these new files.
it uses file name to connect.

and your original “one long file” will cause issues if you try to force FCP to connect to your new files.

one option is to match frame all the shots back into place.
or there’ a coupe of tools you could use to help you re-conect.

one is FCP Reconnect from Video Toolshed. it costs about $60 i think.
OR there is Resolve lite, which is free.
both would involve you exporting an XML from FCP,
bringing it into the software, and re-connecting to the new media
you should then be able to export.

HOWEVER, both would need your files to have the right Timecode.
or a TC that matched your one long original file,
and than might just not be the case.
the more i think about it, the more i think it probably isn’t.

hm. you might have to manually over-cut the film.

there’s always ways to trick FCP, and work these things out, i can think of one right now,
but they are often just as complicated as over-cutting

your original file: where did that come from?
can you describe it and how it differs from the new files?
how many camera rolls are there?

just buy a drive RIGHT NOW!!
or rather: BUY TWO!

transfer the old drive to the new drive.
call the new drive the same name as the old one, and FCP will be none-the-wiser, and you can continue as if nothing had happened.

make a SECOND COPY onto the other new drive.
you are cray if you don’t have a backup ready to go.

2 ways clips can behave as you describe:
1. they have become un-linked
2. you have Linked Selection turned off in the timeline

a bit hard to tell from your pic which it is, as your timeline view of “reduced” leaves out the link indicator, which is a fine line under the clip name.

tuning linked selection on (or off!) is very easy: Shift L
or the tiny link button top right of the timeline.

it’s also relatively easy to unlink all your clips.
select everything in the timeline, and hit Command L

but to re-link, you can only do it ONE CLIP AT A TIME.
select the tracks (including video, if any) and Command L

We’re cutting on an FCP7 / Yosemite system right now.
it works for us.

one machine was upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite a little before i came on board, no big problems there.
one of our editors is cutting on an older iMac, 10.6.8.
his projects open just fine on my Yosimtie machine.

i just opened up a project from 2011, no worries, other than a bunch of reconnects that needed doing, and which seem to be working fine

sounds like you might have some sort of Permissions issue.
it might be simpler to fix your problem than to go backwards.
however, i agree that it was a little crazy (over optimistic?) to upgrade!

re the “Quicktime is Dead” argument, here’s some comments from Andreas Kiel:

Both FCP 7 and FCP X use Quicktime and both of them will do in the future. Apple’s favourite codecs – the ProRes ones – are QT codecs.
AVFoundation is introduced to cover all (this garbage) new camera codecs, because QT would be the wrong environment for them.

For example have a look at the last ProApps update, it was all about installing new QT codecs for FCP X – the side result was that you got a bunch of new options in FCP as well.

basically, you duplicate your final sequence,
set up one as 5.1, one as stereo, and export accordingly.

for 5.1, i have exported as individual tracks (one of the export options)
then assigned them in compressor.
there it suspect a way to set up and export 5.1 from an FCP timeline, but i’ve never done it.

you create 3 elements that you use in DVDSP

1x video file,
2 x audio files

something doesn’t make sense.
is your footage really Prores 1920×1080?
and you’re cutting in a timeline with matching settings?

maybe you put a lot of FX on it, but not rendered them?

i prefer to render regularly during the edit,
then the show is much quicker to get out.
you can even export as a reference move if you plan to run it through compressor

remember “Render All” doesn’t by default render all!
it doesn’t render “Full quality ” fx,
to get that to happen, you have to go into the sequence menu > Render all. and check “Full”

drop a Mirror filter onto the clips.

for more control, make a second copy of the clips on V2 by Option+Shift dragging them up.
then drop a FLOP filter on the V2 copy, and crop and re=position to taste
