can i ask if you have any markers on those clips?

i haven’t had FCP slow down due to waveforms,
but if i’m zoomed all the way in on a timeline with markers, it gets incredibly slow.

you can hide the markers and the problem goes away.
go to Edit Menu > Project Properties, and de-select the type of marker you want to hide.

FCP is rather slow at generating the waveforms.
is that the issue?
or it’s just slow to work on them?

the simplest and quickest way is to select everything in your browser,
and go to File Menu > Reconnect Media.

you get a list, but its not printable, and you can’t really work it other than taking a screen grab and looking at it.

the media manager settings to do this properly are:

– COPY the files
– DONT Delete unused
– Base Media File Names on – Existing File Names

using MM will put all the files in one folder: video, music VO, etc
then you’ll have to re-create any folder structure you have on the other end, and most likely reconnect (which is not a big issue)

still, as your media is spread over so many drives Media Manager may be the simplest approach.
you wont miss any files that may be in weird places like on your desktop.
but you won’t get any files that may live along side your others, but aren’t in the project.

your “usual” has shifted to hi-def !
and from memory, DV was pretty crunchy looking in the FCP canvas

unlike VLC, FCP won’t show any interlacing, it only shows one field (unless you set the viewer of canvas to 100%)

you should put the question to him.

and as i say, Text Up Pro or DH Subs might be a better tool than just the simple FCP text generator,
mainly for the wrapping.
but if you’ve formatted your line-breaks already that might not be an issue.

it’d be worth testing to see how the copy / paste behaves.

to make life a bit easier would do this,
decide on a format you’re happy with in your chosen text generator,
copy it into a bin in the browser, then load it into the viewer.

in the timeline, select all your subtitles. if they are not one one track, do that first.
OPTION SHIFT drag those subs up to the next track, making a copy of them all.

turn off all other tracks except the subtitle track (green buttons)
use the left arrow to move from subtitle to subtitle, and use the REPLACE EDIT (F11) to replace each one with your new template which is in the viewer.

or this is quicker:
with the title template in the viewer, give it a duration that will cover the entire timeline
edit it into a new track (i’ll call it track X for now)
and edit it again into another new track (track Y)

hold SHIFT+OPTION and drag a copy of your boris subs onto track X
while they’re still selected, hit delete
you now have a “negative image” of where your subs sit.
select all of track X, and drag it into track Y,
again, while they’re still selected, hit delete.
bingo, you now have a new set of temple subtitles that match where your Boris ones sit.

then comes the boring part of the copy paste.
but as i say, cheek with Andreas

try duplicating your sequence and deleting everything EXCEPT the subtitles.

you can export an XML from FCP, and run it though TEP to create an .srt file

but NOT if the text is Boris text. avoid that. i don’t think the XML can see into it.
i could be wrong on that, but it certainly is very hard to work with, and you need subs to be fast and simple to work with

if you haven’t made your subs already, i;d recommend Text Up Pro (also from Spherico Film Tools – maybe it comes with TEP?? can’t remember) or DH Sub from Digital Heaven

both of these can have the subs bottom justified, and have auto-wrap.

also look into Make MKV

i read somewhere once that chaining the .mkv extension to .mov will make the subsequent conversion to ProRes a lot easier.
and i’d give that a try as the one time i converted mov to Prores it took over 18 hours for a 90min program

you;d have to put the files back in the autosave vault, into the correct folder.
OR,
just copy the last good autosaved version into your projects folder,
restore the correct project name, and use that.
